# Things to Do in Villa de Leyva, Colombia: Walking Guide

**Things to do in Villa de Leyva**

Looking for things to do in Villa de Leyva? Neywo’s free audio guide for Villa de Leyva includes five narrated places, helping you discover the surrounding landscape through stories about rivers, hills, geological formations and rural towns. Villa de Leyva is a useful base for exploring the contrasting natural and cultural landscapes of Colombia’s Cundinamarca department.

## What to see around Villa de Leyva

The places covered by the guide include natural features and geological sites spread across the region. Together, they offer a different way to understand the territory beyond the town itself.

### Bogotá River

The Bogotá River is one of the major waterways of Cundinamarca. It forms part of the Magdalena River basin and is a right tributary of the Magdalena River, meaning that its waters eventually join one of Colombia’s principal river systems.

Its scale and reach make it an important feature of the wider landscape. The river connects the local environment with a much larger network of waterways across Colombia.

### Cuchilla de Agua Dios

Cuchilla de Agua Dios is a hill in Colombia’s Cundinamarca Department, in the central part of the country. It lies about 70 kilometres west of Bogotá.

The hill is part of the region’s varied terrain, where elevated areas and flatter agricultural landscapes appear alongside one another. It is one of the natural landmarks included in the audio guide’s route through the area.

### Quebrada Pilula

Quebrada Pilula is a watercourse in Cundinamarca, approximately 80 kilometres west of Bogotá. Like the Bogotá River, it belongs to the region’s network of waterways and contributes to the character of its landscape.

A stop here adds a closer look at the smaller streams and channels that shape the countryside between the hills and open ground.

### Loma Gorda Formation

The Loma Gorda Formation is a geological feature of the Colombian Andes. Its rocks are made up of laminated siltstones and shales, with visible layers that preserve a much older chapter of Earth’s history.

The formation is the uppermost unit of the Güagüaquí Group, a geological sequence found in the Upper Magdalena Valley and the surrounding Central and Eastern Ranges of the Andes. It is also fossiliferous and dates from the Late Cretaceous period, specifically the Turonian and Coniacian epochs. The formation reaches a maximum thickness of 167 metres.

Rather than treating the rocks as simple scenery, the guide places them in their geological context: the layers record an environment that existed long before the present-day Andes took their current form.

### Ricaurte

Ricaurte is a town in Cundinamarca, around 80 kilometres west of Bogotá. Its setting is marked by a clear contrast between hills to the east and flatter land to the west.

The surrounding area is largely agricultural, with farmland mixed with natural vegetation. Southeast of the town, the highest nearby point reaches 610 metres, at a distance of about 4.3 kilometres. These features create a landscape that shifts from rolling terrain to more open, level ground.

Ricaurte is therefore a useful stop for observing how settlement, farming and landform fit together in this part of central Colombia.
