## What to see in Campeche

### San Francisco de Campeche and its fortified historic centre

San Francisco de Campeche is the capital of the state of Campeche and a historic city on the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the few walled cities in the Americas, with a remarkably well-preserved city wall surrounding its historic centre.

The city brings together Campeche’s main legislative, executive, judicial, educational, cultural, tourist and commercial centres. Its historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, recognising the importance of its preserved urban and architectural heritage.

The name Campeche comes from the Maya word *Kaanpech*, meaning “Place of serpents and ticks”. Walking through the historic centre is the best way to appreciate the relationship between the city and its fortifications, which helped shape its distinctive character.

### Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception stands in the historic centre, facing lively Independence Plaza. It is the main church of the Diocese of Campeche and the seat of its bishop, and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its design combines Baroque architecture with neoclassical touches. The cathedral received its rank in 1895, when Pope Leo XIII granted it cathedral status.

Inside, the church contains sacred art and religious figurines. One of its best-known pieces is *El Santo Entierro*, a coffin bearing a figure of Christ. The monument is carried through the main streets of the city every Good Friday, making it an important part of Campeche’s religious traditions.

### Bandera Monumental

The Bandera Monumental is a towering flagpole carrying a massive Mexican flag. It belongs to a collection of Monumental Flags: tall masts designed to display enormous versions of Mexico’s national banner.

The initiative began under President Ernesto Zedillo. Today, the flags are overseen by the Directorate General of Clothing and Equipment, part of the Secretary of National Defense. Some flags in the collection rank among the largest in the world, making the monument a striking reminder of Mexico’s national identity.

### Edzná

Edzná is a Maya archaeological site in the lush Valle de Edzná, in the state of Campeche. It flourished as a regional centre of power and culture between 300 and 1000 AD.

The ancient city extends across about twenty-five square kilometres and includes religious temples and residential complexes. Its architecture brings together Puuc, Petén and Chenes influences, creating a distinctive blend of Maya building traditions.

Edzná also reveals the sophistication of the city’s water management. Canals supported intensive agriculture and provided residents with a reliable supply of fish. Together with the temples and residential areas, they show how the site functioned as a major centre in the ancient Maya world.
