# What to See in Göreme, Turkey: Free Audio Guide

**Things to do in Göreme: churches, caves and Cappadocia’s rock landscape**

The best things to do in Göreme include exploring rock-cut churches, walking through the Göreme open-air museum and taking in the dramatic landscape of Cappadocia. Soft volcanic rock has been shaped by erosion and carved by people into homes, chapels, churches and monasteries, creating one of Turkey’s most distinctive historic sites. Neywo has a free audio guide for Göreme with 8 narrated places.

## What to see in Göreme

### Churches of Göreme

The Churches of Göreme form one of Turkey’s most remarkable open-air sanctuaries. Across this landscape, soft rock was carved into houses, churches and monasteries, turning the terrain itself into a religious settlement.

The landscape began forming after the eruption of Mount Erciyes about 2.6 million years ago, when ash and lava created soft rock across Cappadocia. Wind and water later wore it away, leaving the harder caps and pillars associated with the region’s fairy chimneys.

From the 4th century onwards, communities of anchorites began living here and carving cells into the rock, following the teachings of Saint Basil of Caesarea. The churches preserve the story of this long spiritual tradition, while the surrounding rock formations show how closely nature and human settlement are connected.

### Meryem Ana Church

Meryem Ana Church is a historic rock-cut church in the Göreme District. Like many of the area’s sacred spaces, it was formed directly from the soft rock and is best appreciated as part of the wider landscape of carved churches and monasteries.

### Kılıçlar Church

Kılıçlar Church, also known as the Swords Church, is tucked into the rocky landscape of Göreme. Its architecture blends into the surrounding formations, making it a good place to notice how the region’s builders used the natural rock rather than constructing separate buildings.

Take time to look at the details carved into the stone and at the way the interior space fits within the rock.

### El Nazar Church

El Nazar Church is a small rock-cut church and one of the quieter places to visit around Göreme. Its interior was formed by hand from the rock, creating a modest space with a strong sense of permanence.

The simplicity of the church helps reveal how early communities adapted the landscape for worship. It is a particularly atmospheric stop for visitors interested in the less elaborate spaces beyond the larger museum sites.

### Church of Saint Catherine

The Church of Saint Catherine is also known as the Church with Sandals or the Dark Church. This 11th-century cave church is considered one of the most beautiful in the Göreme region.

Its name refers to the limited natural light entering through a single small window in the narthex, leaving much of the interior in darkness. The church is also known locally as Aziz Katarina Şapeli.

### Tokalı Church

Tokalı Church, or the Church of the Buckle, is one of Göreme’s notable cave churches. It is carved directly into the rock, like many of the sacred spaces in Cappadocia.

Its position within the wider group of churches makes it an important stop when exploring the region’s rock-cut religious architecture.

### Church of Saint Barbara

The Church of Saint Barbara stands out for its unusual cross-shaped plan. Compared with some of the more elaborately painted churches nearby, its interior is relatively simple, with quiet rock walls surrounding the space.

It is also known as Aziz Barbara Kilisesi and St. Barbara’s Chapel. The distinctive layout makes it easy to recognize among Göreme’s many cave churches.

### Göreme Historical National Park

Göreme Historical National Park places the region’s churches within their wider natural setting. Located in central Turkey’s Cappadocia region, the park covers nearly 100 square kilometres in Nevşehir Province.

The landscape was created over millennia by water and wind erosion. Beneath the surface lies a network of ancient, interconnected underground settlements carved into the soft rock, showing that Göreme’s history extends beyond the visible churches and fairy chimneys.

In 1985, the area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia. It is one of the defining places to visit in [Cappadocia](https://neywo.com/destinations/turkey/cappadocia.md), where geological formations and human history are inseparable.
