Plaza Pedro del Castillo

This green square marks the original founding site of Mendoza in the 16th century. For centuries it was the city’s religious and social centre until the 1861 earthquake destroyed the surrounding colonial architecture. Today the plaza sits beside the Museum of the Foundation Area, the Ruinas de San Francisco, an underground chamber and a section of Parque O’Higgins.

Museum of the Foundation Area

Located on Plaza Pedro del Castillo, this museum opened in 1993 and tells the story of Mendoza from its founding in 1561 by Pedro del Castillo through colonial life, the 1861 earthquake, a slaughterhouse era and the municipal fair of 1930. Artefacts on display illustrate everyday life across these periods.

Basílica de San Francisco

A minor basilica in the heart of Mendoza, the Basílica de San Francisco houses the revered image of the Virgen del Carmen de Cuyo—patron and general of the Army of the Andes—and the baton of command once held by General José de San Martín. Its neo‑Romanesque façade was completed in 1875 and the building serves as the parish church of the Archdiocese of Mendoza.

Plaza España

Inaugurated in 1949 as a monument after the 1861 earthquake, Plaza España is celebrated as Mendoza’s most beautiful square. It forms part of the lush green expanse that surrounds Plaza Independencia and offers a tranquil spot for cafés and leisurely walks.

Our Lady of Loreto Cathedral (Mendoza Cathedral)

The current seat of the Archbishop of Mendoza, this cathedral began as a 19th‑century chapel. After the original cathedral was destroyed in the 1861 earthquake, it was raised to interim cathedral status in 1934. Its interior holds about five hundred worshippers, a modest size for a city of Mendoza’s scale.

Plaza Independencia

Opened in 1863, Plaza Independencia is the central gathering place of Mendoza. The square has long hosted markets, celebrations and everyday city life, serving as the focal point from which the city’s other plazas radiate.

Teatro Independencia

Mendoza’s premier performing arts venue, the Teatro Independencia seats up to 730 spectators across four gallery levels. Its neoclassical façade features Corinthian columns, a rococo frieze and the Mendoza coat of arms. Inside, a grey marble staircase leads to an auditorium modelled on Italian opera houses. The theatre opened in 1925 with the opera La emigrada and has hosted everything from early sound films to concerts and operas.

Plaza Chile

This urban square honours the friendship between Argentina and Chile, rooted in Chilean aid after the 1861 earthquake. Originally named Plaza Chile, it was briefly renamed San Martín in 1883 and Cobo in 1904 before the name Plaza Chile was definitively restored in 1920.
