What to See in Nassau

Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte is a British colonial-era fort on a hill overlooking Nassau Harbour. Built in the late 18th century by Lord Dunmore after the American Revolutionary War, it was intended as a defensive position against invading Spaniards. Despite its military purpose, the fort has never been used in battle, making it a remarkably peaceful historical landmark.

Museum of Junkanoo

The Museum of Junkanoo introduces one of the Bahamas’ most vibrant cultural traditions. Its displays explore the colourful costumes, energetic music, and lively parades associated with Junkanoo, while also highlighting the artistry and craftsmanship behind the celebration.

Pirates of Nassau

For a look at Nassau’s swashbuckling past, the Pirates of Nassau museum tells the story of the buccaneers who once ruled these waters. Exhibits and displays bring the city’s famous pirate era to life and explain the maritime history that shaped the islands.

Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral stands in the heart of Nassau and is the seat of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is widely regarded as the Mother Church of Anglican churches across the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos.

St. Francis Xavier Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier on West Street is the mother church of the Bahamas and the seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Nassau. Inaugurated in 1886, it was the first Catholic church in the Bahamas. The current cathedral stands just 17 metres from the original building, known as the Old Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier.

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Kirk

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Kirk has been part of downtown Nassau since it was founded by 55 Scottish Presbyterian settlers in 1798. The first stone of the present Kirk was laid on August 7, 1810. The complex later gained a meeting hall and a manse, while the church also played a role in local community life through its mission school and Boys’ Brigade.

Fort Fincastle and the Queen’s Staircase

Built in 1793 on Society and Bennet’s Hills, Fort Fincastle was designed to protect Nassau from pirates. Lord Dunmore named it after his second title, Viscount Fincastle. Its unusual shape resembles a paddle steamer, and its elevated position provides views over Nassau, Paradise Island, and the eastern approaches to New Providence.

The fort once mounted several cannons and also served as a lighthouse until September 1817, when the lighthouse on Paradise Island replaced it. It was later used as a signal station. Many visitors reach Fort Fincastle by way of the Queen’s Staircase, a historic limestone pathway leading to the fort’s entrance.

Gregory’s Arch

Gregory’s Arch is a notable landmark in Nassau and a small but distinctive part of the city’s built environment. It is worth pausing at as you move through the city.

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas was the first institution of its kind in the country. It occupies Villa Doyle, a beautifully restored building dating from 1860, and focuses on Bahamian artists.

The collection includes ceramics, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and textiles, mostly from the twentieth century. It also contains works by other artists, including landscapes by the American painter Winslow Homer. The gallery was established to help record, preserve, and interpret the story of the independent, sovereign nation founded in 1973.

Nassau’s Historic Churches

Nassau’s churches add further layers to a walk through the city. St. Matthew’s Anglican Church has the oldest church building in the Bahamas and may be the oldest surviving building on New Providence. Bethel Baptist Church, St. Agnes Anglican Church, and Zion Baptist Church are also notable places of worship and meaningful landmarks in the city.

Heritage Museum of the Bahamas

The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas traces the islands’ history from the Lucayan people through the colonial era and into modern Bahamian life. Its collection brings together artefacts, artwork, and historical objects that help explain how the Bahamas became the nation it is today.
