Holy Redeemer Cathedral

A devastating hurricane in 1961 destroyed the original wooden floor, forcing a complete replacement with concrete and tile.

St. John’s Cathedral

Built in 1812, St. John’s Cathedral is the oldest Anglican church in all of Central America and served as the very first church constructed in the colony of British Honduras. It functions as the seat of the Bishop of Belize and the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Belize. The exterior is built of brick, while the interior features fittings of native mahogany and sapodilla wood. The cathedral grounds also hold Yarborough Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in the country.

Bliss Institute

The Bliss Institute serves as the cultural heart of Belize City, uniting theatre, a museum, and the National Arts Council under one roof. Named after the British philanthropist Baron Bliss, whose trusteeship funded its construction, work began in 1953 and finished a year later with an investment of over a quarter of a million dollars from the Baron’s estate. Designed in a clean modernist international style, the building features an auditorium gallery shaped like the prow of a ship as a nod to the Baron’s maritime legacy. Following a 2003 refurbishment, it reopened as the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts and houses the headquarters of the Institute of Creative Arts, along with a museum holding archaeological finds from the ancient Maya site of Caracol.
