The mausoleum honors Ernesto “Che” Guevara and the 29 companions who died with him in Bolivia in 1967. Their remains were recovered there in 1997 and returned to Cuba, where they were laid to rest on 17 October 1997 with full military honors. A bronze statue by José Delarra rises 6.7 metres (about 22 feet) above the complex, which also contains a museum displaying Guevara’s personal belongings and exhibits on his life and revolutionary ideas. An eternal flame, lit by Fidel Castro, burns in his memory.
