See St. Rose Cathedral

St. Rose Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Rosa or Catedral de Santa Rosa de Lima, is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán. Dedicated to St. Rose of Lima, it has played an important role in the city’s religious history.

The first church on the site was built between 1798 and 1803. A powerful earthquake on November 21, 1877, seriously damaged the building, and architect Francisco Martínez was hired in 1880 to repair and partially reconstruct it while preserving its Baroque style.

Another major earthquake struck on December 26, 1915. Repairs followed in 1916, the same year the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán was founded. These successive changes form part of the cathedral’s story and its place in the history of the city.
