What to See in Ramsey

Parliament Square

Parliament Square, known in Manx as Kerrin y Valley and also as Market Square, is an important meeting point for roads through Ramsey. It is also part of the famous Snaefell Mountain Course used for the Isle of Man TT Races.

The square has a long association with motor racing on the island. It formed part of the Highland Course and the Four Inch Course during the Gordon Bennett Trial and Tourist Trophy automobile races held between 1904 and 1922. From 1911, it became part of the Snaefell Mountain Course, later also used for the Manx Grand Prix from 1923.

The route around the square changed several times. In 1923, the course used a private road between Parliament Square and May Hill instead of Albert Road and Tower Road. The square was also connected with the Sandygate Loop, which included an official refuelling stop nearby during the 1904 Gordon Bennett British Eliminating Trial and the 1905 Tourist Trophy Race for automobiles.

Our Lady, Star of the Sea & St Maughold Church

On Dale Street stands Our Lady, Star of the Sea & St Maughold Church, a Catholic church with an important place in Ramsey’s built heritage. Its story began with a small chapel, opened in 1893. As more funds were raised, plans were made for a larger church.

Construction began in 1909 to designs by Giles Gilbert Scott, and the building was completed the following year. Inside, the reredos was created by Frances Bessie Burlison. The church is one of the Registered Buildings of the Isle of Man, recognising its architectural and historical importance.

St Paul’s, Ramsey

St Paul’s is one of the surviving parts of Old Ramsey in this area. Designed by Thomas Brine, the church was consecrated in 1822 and has developed through several later additions.

A west gallery for musicians was added in 1830, followed by two side wings in 1844. The church gained a new vestry in 1874 and a new porch in 1938. Its changing appearance reflects the way the building adapted to the needs of the town over time.

The Grove Museum of Victorian Life

The Grove Museum of Victorian Life is a nineteenth-century country house and museum on Ramsey’s northeast coast. It tells the story of the Gibb family, who came from Liverpool and remained connected with the house for generations.

Three generations of Gibb women managed The Grove before the last family member died in 1974. One of the museum’s most remarkable features is the survival of its rooms and interiors. The house was left to the state in the family’s will on the condition that nothing inside would be altered.

The preserved interiors offer a direct impression of how the family lived, while the wider story follows their fortunes from great wealth to much more modest circumstances. The Grove therefore presents both a Victorian home and a family history stretching into modern times. The museum is managed by Manx National Heritage.
