Independence Square

Independence Square is the historic heart of Basseterre and has been a centre of civic, commercial and social life for centuries. The government acquired the square in 1750, when it was known as Pall Mall Square. Its current name dates from September 19, 1983, the day Saint Kitts and Nevis achieved political independence from the United Kingdom.

The square also carries a difficult history. It was once the site of a slave market. A platform stood where the fountain is today, while enslaved Africans were temporarily held in the basement of a building on the south side. The basement, with barred windows, remains visible. Historians believe it was probably the auction house, and slave traders also operated around the square and nearby Liverpool Row.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception stands in the centre of Basseterre and serves as a Catholic cathedral. It shares the seat of the Diocese of Saint John’s-Basseterre with Holy Family Cathedral in Saint John’s, Antigua, which explains the title of co-cathedral.

The site reaches back to the earliest period of French settlement. Jesuit missionaries built a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, then known as Notre Dame. English soldiers destroyed it by fire in 1706 during the Anglo-French war. It was rebuilt by 1710 under the dedication of St. George and later became a place of Anglican worship.

The history of the cathedral reflects the religious and political changes that shaped Basseterre. After English control was established in 1713, Catholics were barred from practising publicly and faced restrictions in civil and military life. The present church therefore stands on a site connected with several centuries of religious change.

St Barnabas Anglican Chapel is a small Anglican church in the Saint George Basseterre area of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Its modest scale offers a contrast with the larger churches in the centre and adds another religious landmark to a walk through the city.

St. George’s Anglican Church

St. George’s Anglican Church is the largest church in Basseterre and one of the most historically significant buildings in Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is an Anglican parish church and also serves as a Pro-Cathedral, making it an important religious centre for the Anglican community in the region.

Its story began in the seventeenth century. French Jesuits built a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary on the site in 1670. That building was destroyed by fire in 1706, rebuilt in 1710 and taken over for Anglican worship from the 1720s.

The church suffered repeated damage. It was affected in 1763, then left in ruins after an earthquake in 1842 and a hurricane in 1843. The first stone of a new church was laid on October 22, 1844. Construction progressed slowly, and the congregation continued meeting in the ruins of the earlier building for twelve years. The current church was finally begun in 1856 and consecrated on March 25, 1859.
