What to See in Borgo Maggiore

Monastero di Santa Chiara

In the Valdragone area, the Monastero di Santa Chiara is a living monastery occupied by a community of Poor Clare nuns. Its current building is modern: construction began in 1969 and the monastery opened for worship in 1971. Yet the monastic presence here goes back much further, to the first monastery built on the site in 1565.

The original structure was supported by Bishop Costantino Bonelli, the government of San Marino, and local citizens. Although the older building no longer stands, the monastery continues a tradition of prayer and simplicity that has lasted for more than four centuries.

Oratorio di San Rocco

The Oratorio di San Rocco stands just outside Cailungo, one of the historic parishes of Borgo Maggiore. The modest chapel was built after a devastating plague, in honor of Saint Rocco, who was invoked as a protector against disease.

Its most notable artwork is an oil painting dated 1594. The scene shows the Madonna and Child enthroned with Saint Rocco, Saint Marino, and Saint John the Baptist. The painting has remained in the chapel for more than four centuries, giving this small oratory a strong sense of continuity.

Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Consolation is a modern church and an important spiritual center for Borgo Maggiore. It was built in 1964 and consecrated three years later. The sanctuary belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro.

Its modern architecture reflects a more recent chapter in the religious history of Borgo Maggiore, alongside older places of worship such as the Oratorio di San Rocco and the centuries-old monastic tradition of Santa Chiara.

Mount Titano and the landscape of San Marino

Borgo Maggiore lies on the northeastern slopes of Monte Titano, the limestone peak that rises 739 metres above the Adriatic coast. The town’s position below the mountain gives it a clear visual relationship with the historic center of San Marino, higher up on the slopes.

San Marino covers 61 square kilometres and is completely surrounded by Italy. From Monte Titano, the sea is about ten kilometres away and can be visible on a clear day. The mountain, the settlements below it, and the surrounding landscape form part of the historical and cultural setting recognized by UNESCO.

Borgo Maggiore is also one of the places that helps explain San Marino beyond its famous hilltop landmarks. Its atmosphere is connected to everyday life, local religious history, and the relationship between the lower town and the capital above.
