What to See in Philipsburg

Voorstraat and Philipsburg’s Churches

Voorstraat is home to two of Philipsburg’s notable churches, each with a story connected to the town’s development.

St. Martin of Tours’ Church has stood in the community since the first stone was laid in 1844. As Philipsburg grew, the church was expanded several times. The largest enlargement began after funds were raised in 1933 and was completed on May 30, 1952. A statue of Saint Martin of Tours has stood beside the church since November 11, 2012.

Further along Voorstraat, the Methodist Church is a smaller building with a distinctive appearance. The first church on the site was built in 1851 and served the Methodist community for more than a century. After termite damage led to its demolition in 1978, it was rebuilt in its original state the following year. Its wooden roof shingles give the facade a particularly traditional character.

Great Bay and the Waterfront

Great Bay is one of the defining features of Philipsburg. The town lies between the bay and the Great Salt Pond, while its protected harbor helped shape its development as a port and point of entry.

The waterfront is a natural place to see Philipsburg’s connection with the sea. It brings together the harbor, the town’s public spaces and the coastal setting that has influenced local life for centuries.

The Great Salt Pond

The Great Salt Pond forms the other side of Philipsburg’s setting. Salt production played an important role in the island’s early economy and helps explain why the town developed in this location.

The area also includes colorful murals, market spaces and remnants of old fortifications. These features add several different perspectives to a walk through the capital, from public art and local activity to the history of salt and defense.

Front Street

Front Street is Philipsburg’s historic commercial street. Its colorful buildings contain shops, cafés and duty-free retailers, creating one of the town’s liveliest areas.

The street also reflects the origins of Philipsburg. The settlement was founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish vice-admiral who served in the Dutch navy. Locals often refer to the capital simply as Town.

The Old Courthouse

The Old Courthouse is one of Philipsburg’s visible historic buildings. Located near Front Street, it dates from 1793 and has served several purposes over the years, including as a jail, post office and fire station.

Its changing roles offer a glimpse into the practical institutions of a growing settlement and make it a useful stop when exploring the town’s historic center.

The Statue of Claude Wathey

A statue in Philipsburg honors Claude Wathey, a notable figure in Sint Maarten’s history. It provides another point of interest while walking through the town and connects the streetscape with the island’s more recent political and civic history.

A Compact Capital to Explore on Foot
