National Heroes Square

Located in the center of the capital along Upper Broad Street and the northern shore of the Careenage—also known as the Constitution River—this prominent public space serves as a focal point for the city’s commercial life. Formerly known as Trafalgar Square, it adopted its current name on April 22, 1999.

Cathedral Church of Saint Michael and All Angels

Positioned two blocks east of National Heroes Square on St. Michael’s Row, this Anglican cathedral rises higher than any other Anglican house of worship on the island. Formerly known as St. Michael’s Parish Church, it now functions as the seat of the Anglican Diocese of Barbados.

Nidhe Israel Synagogue

Situated on Synagogue Lane within the Synagogue Historic District, this is the only synagogue in Barbados and one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. In 2011, the synagogue and its excavated mikveh were designated UNESCO-protected properties within the World Heritage Site.

National Library Service of Barbados

Also known as the Bridgetown Free Library, the main branch on Coleridge Street was constructed between 1903 and 1906 using funds from a grant donated by Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Its distinctive coral-stone structure is built in the English Renaissance style.

Kensington Oval

Located in the western part of Bridgetown, this major sporting venue has played a central role in local sports for more than 120 years. Cricket has been played at the Oval since 1882, when the Pickwick Cricket Club took ownership of the field, though the stadium is also used for football.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Serving as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgetown, this cathedral replaced an 1848 building that was destroyed by fire in 1897. The current structure was completed in 1899, consecrated in 1903, and became a cathedral in 1970 upon the creation of the diocese. It also features a training center and a collection of heraldic plates.

George Washington House

This historic home is directly connected to a young George Washington and his half-brother Lawrence, who stayed here in 1751. Now operating as a museum, its exhibitions explore the visit and daily life in period Barbados. This marks the only location outside the United States that George Washington ever visited.

Barbados Museum & Historical Society

Housed in the former Military Prison at Saint Ann’s historic Garrison, this museum was established in 1933 following the founding of a historical society by Eustace Maxwell Shilstone. Its collections comprise more than 500,000 artifacts, including antique maps and paintings that document the island’s history and natural history.

Saint Ann’s Fort

Built by the British in 1705 and named in honor of Queen Anne of Great Britain, this stronghold sits within the Garrison Historic Area and bridges the island’s military past and present.

Fort Charles

Overlooking Carlisle Bay at Needham’s Point, this fortification—also known as Charles Fort—was originally erected in 1650 as Needham’s Fort and was subsequently rebuilt in 1811 as part of the local UNESCO World Heritage Site.
