Things to do in Barbados
Barbados is a small Caribbean island whose layered history—from Indigenous roots to British colony, plantation society, independence and republic—has created a vibrant culture that blends West African, Portuguese, Creole, Indian and British influences. Visitors come to experience its historic sites, lively traditions and warm Bajan hospitality. Neywo offers a free audio guide for Barbados, covering 1 city with 12 narrated places across 2 walking tours.
A brief look at Barbados’s story
Long before European arrival, Indigenous people knew the island as Ichirouganaim. Permanent English settlement began in the seventeenth century, and sugar cane soon reshaped the landscape and economy. Plantation life relied first on Irish indentured labourers and then on enslaved Africans; slavery persisted until it was phased out across most of the British Empire. Today most Barbadians are descendants of those enslaved Africans. The island became an independent sovereign state in 1966 while remaining a Commonwealth realm, and later transitioned to a republic within the Commonwealth, replacing the monarchy with a ceremonial president. This long path explains why Barbadian culture carries such a rich mix of influences, and why locals are affectionately called Bajans and often refer to their home as Bim.
