Brunei Museum

The Brunei Museum in Kota Batu is the nation’s largest national museum, housing collections of Islamic art, Southeast Asian archaeology and ethnography that trace Brunei’s story from the 16th century onward. It also publishes the Brunei Museum Journal, an annual academic periodical launched in 1969.

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, completed in 1958, is famed for its gold‑leaf dome that seems to float on a man‑made lagoon. A replica of a 16th‑century royal barge rests in the water, and the mosque’s Mughal‑inspired arches and minarets echo the style of the Taj Mahal.

Istana Nurul Iman

Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, holds the title of the world’s largest palace. Set on a riverside hill a few kilometres southwest of the city, its interiors were designed by Khuan Chew, and the view from the Brunei River at sunset is especially striking.

Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum

The Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum is situated in the Kota Batu area along the banks of the Brunei River.

Royal Regalia Museum

The Royal Regalia Museum displays the Sultan’s royal insignia, including his ceremonial chariot. Originally a 1965 monument, it reopened as a museum on 30 September 1992 after a renovation that blended constructivist forms with Melayu Islam Beraja design.

Brunei History Centre

Established in 1982 with the Sultan’s consent, the Brunei History Centre is the national institution tasked with researching, documenting and sharing Brunei’s past.

This gallery celebrates the living heritage of Kampong Ayer, the stilt‑house water village. Exhibits showcase locally made ceramics, woodworking and intricate woven textiles that reflect generations of craftsmanship.

Malay Technology Museum

Situated next to the Brunei Museum in Kota Batu, the Malay Technology Museum was a gift from Royal Dutch Shell to mark Brunei’s independence in 1984 and opened on 29 February 1988. Its exhibits cover traditional boat building, fishing techniques and metal‑working crafts such as goldsmithing.

Pro‑Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Pro‑Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption serves as the Roman Catholic church for Brunei’s capital. In Malay it is known as Prokatedral Santa Maria Diangkat ke Surga or Gereja Santa Maria Diangkat ke Surga.

Brunei Clock Tower

The Brunei Clock Tower is a clock tower located in the city.

Brunei‑Muara District

Brunei‑Muara is the smallest of Brunei’s four districts yet home to about 320 000 residents within 571 km². It contains the capital, the country’s only international airport and its deep‑water port at Muara, with the Brunei River running through it and Kampong Ayer lining its banks.

Teng Yun Temple

Teng Yun Temple is a Chinese temple where the local Chinese community has gathered for worship and celebration for many generations.

Istana Darul Hana

From 1951 until 1987, Istana Darul Hana served as the private residence of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. Its hilltop position offers a quiet retreat set back from the main road, recalling a pivotal era in Brunei’s recent history.

Istana Darussalam

Istana Darussalam once housed Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and is also the birthplace of the current Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah. Its architecture reflects mid‑twentieth‑century royal life in Brunei.

Jame ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

The Jame ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, locally called Masjid Emas (the Golden Mosque), features twenty‑nine carat gold domes. Built to honour the 29th Sultan, construction began in 1988 on a twenty‑acre site in Kiarong and the mosque opened on 14 July 1994, with a prayer hall that can accommodate up to five thousand worshippers.
