2 cities in Brunei.
Things to do in Brunei
Brunei is a small sultanate on the northern coast of Borneo, known for its extensive rainforests, Islamic heritage and oil‑rich towns. Visitors can explore historic sites such as the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Brunei Museum, then venture into the mountainous Temburong District for pristine jungle scenery. Neywo offers a free audio guide for Brunei, covering 2 cities with 27 narrated places across 2 walking tours, available in 11 languages.
History
Local tradition credits the founding of Brunei to Awang Alak Betatar, who later took the title Sultan Muhammad Shah and settled near the Brunei River estuary around 1400, becoming the country’s first Muslim ruler. Under Sultan Bolkiah the sultanate reached its peak, with influence said to stretch across much of Borneo and beyond. The visiting crew of Magellan’s expedition highlighted Brunei’s position on early maritime routes. Over time, territory was ceded to James Brooke and the British North Borneo Chartered Company, leading to a British protectorate. Japanese forces occupied the islands during World War II, after which a new constitution was adopted. A small armed revolt was suppressed with British help, and the episode contributed to the Sultan’s decision to keep Brunei out of the Malaysian Federation. On 1 January 1984 Brunei regained full sovereignty, and its official name now includes Darussalam, meaning “Abode of Peace.”
Geography
Brunei consists of two separate land portions on Borneo. The larger western section holds the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, and faces the South China Sea, while the eastern Temburong District is mountainous and surrounded by Sarawak. Much of the country lies within Borneo’s lowland rain forests, with mountain rain forests farther inland. In 2020 forest covered about 72 percent of Brunei’s land area, much of it naturally regenerating. The climate is tropical and equatorial, shaped more by the Intertropical Convergence Zone than by trade winds, and cyclones are rare. Notably, Brunei is the only sovereign state entirely on Borneo, although its territory is split by the Sarawak district of Limbang. Beyond the capital lie the port town of Muara and the oil‑producing town of Seria.
