Historic and Religious Landmarks
At the heart of the capital sits Independence Square, better known as the Largo, which stretches between Sveta Nedelya Square on the site of the ancient fortified city of Serdica. Nearby stands the Banya Bashi Mosque, the sole medieval mosque still standing and in active use in the city, dating back to around 1566 or 1567 and named for its proximity to a former bathhouse complex. In the city center, you will also find the Orthodox Saint Nicholas of Sofia Church and the Cathedral of St Joseph, a major Roman Catholic church whose foundation stone was laid by Pope John Paul II in 2002 before its inauguration in 2006.
Museums and Cultural Heritage
For those interested in the country’s vast heritage, the National History Museum holds over half a million objects, including artifacts from the Valchitran, Dabene, Rogozen, and Panagyurishte hoards. In the Boyana quarter at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, Boyana Church features eighty-nine painted scenes with 240 human figures, earning it a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1979. Further out in a suburb once called ‘Red Star’, the Museum of Socialist Art displays statues, busts, and paintings created between 1944 and 1989 across an outdoor sculpture park, an exhibition hall, and a media screening room. Sofia also houses the National Museum of Military History, which preserves the nation’s military heritage.
Parks and Monuments
The city’s green spaces and memorials offer insight into different eras of its history. In the Doctors’ Garden, the Doctors’ Monument takes the form of a truncated stone pyramid topped with a granite sarcophagus to commemorate the medical staff who lost their lives in the Liberation War of 1877 to 1878. Nearby, Knyazheska Gradina sits in the very center of the city. Further out, Vladimir Zaimov Park hosts the Sofia Drama Theatre and the Sfumato Theatre Workshop inside a restored bathhouse building, while Borisova Gradina—the city’s oldest park—contains both the Vasil Levski National Stadium and the Balgarska Armia Stadium.
