What to See in Bokor
Bokor Church
Welcome to the Old Catholic Church of Bokor Mountain. You are standing before the second-oldest Roman Catholic church still standing in Cambodia, perched here atop the misty Bokor Hill Station. This church was built back in the 1920s, during the French colonial era, when Bokor was developed as a hill station retreat. For nearly a century, it has watched over this mountaintop, its stone walls weathering monsoon rains and cool mountain winds.
What makes this place remarkable is that it is still here at all. During the Khmer Rouge years, churches and pagodas across Cambodia were systematically destroyed, but this building is one of the very few that survived that terror, standing as a quiet testament to endurance. Today, the church sits in ruins with its roof gone, windows as empty frames, and vegetation creeping through the nave. There is a haunting beauty to it, with light filtering through the open walls and silence broken only by wind and birdsong. A restoration project is now under development, leaving the church in transition as visitors walk through the nave, touch the weathered stone, and imagine the services once held high above the clouds.
