Citadel Hill and the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
Rising about 60 meters above sea level, Citadel Hill has stood at the center of the city’s defenses since the British founded Halifax in 1749. Four different fortifications were built here over time, with the current star-shaped masonry fort constructed between 1828 and 1856 to protect the Royal Navy Dockyard. Today, the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site preserves the fort as it appeared in the Victorian era. Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
Located on the waterfront, Pier 21 served as an ocean liner terminal and immigration facility from 1928 to 1971. As Canada’s last surviving seaport immigration facility, it welcomed nearly one million newcomers and war brides, earning comparisons to Ellis Island. Today, the building houses the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, where visitors can explore the Pier 21 Story exhibition, walk through replica train cars, and view oral histories and memorial walls.
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and CSS Acadia
As Canada’s oldest and largest maritime museum, this waterfront institution holds over 30,000 artifacts detailing life at sea, including small craft, photographs, and charts. Moored outside at the museum is the CSS Acadia, a hydrographic and oceanographic research ship launched in 1913. She served for 56 years on Canada’s eastern waters and is the only ship still afloat that served in both World Wars and was present at the 1917 Halifax Explosion.
Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
Situated in downtown Halifax, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia occupies about 6,200 square metres across the historic Dominion Building and the Provincial Building. St. Mary’s Basilica

Pope Pius XII designated it a Minor Basilica in 1950.
