Vidzeme travel guide: history and identity
The name Vidzeme means “the Middle Land”. In Latvian, it is Vidzeme; in Livonian, Vidūmō. Older German usage called the area Livland, linking it to Livonia, although modern Vidzeme represents only part of medieval Livonia and about the Latvian half of Swedish Livonia.
Vidzeme lies north of the Daugava River, with Riga in its southwestern part. The Daugava was an important boundary between different peoples and lands. Before modern borders existed, Latgalians lived in the area alongside Livs, particularly near the Gulf of Riga coast and along the lower Daugava and Gauja rivers.
The region’s political history changed repeatedly. German conquest came in the 13th century. After the Livonian War, parts of Vidzeme passed to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Sweden later invaded several times and controlled the western part of the Duchy of Livonia, with its eastern boundary set roughly at the Aiviekste River. During the Great Northern War, Russia conquered Swedish Livonia, which was ceded to the Russian Empire in 1721.
After the First World War, the wider Governorate of Livonia was divided between the newly independent states of Latvia and Estonia. Vidzeme later experienced Soviet occupation and Nazi German occupation during the Second World War. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it became part of independent Latvia again.
Today, Vidzeme is not an administrative entity in its own right, but it remains one of Latvia’s historical lands. Most of its inhabitants are Latvians, making it the country’s most ethnically Latvian region. The modern Vidzeme Planning Region covers much of the traditional territory, while other parts belong to the Riga Planning Region.

Turaida Castle and the medieval castle in Sigulda reflect the area’s long history of fortified settlements and changing powers. Krimulda adds another historic site to the group, making Sigulda a strong choice for travellers interested in the castles of Vidzeme.
Cēsis
Cēsis is another essential stop for historic architecture. Its main landmark is Cēsis Castle, while the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Cēsis provides a further link to the town’s religious and medieval heritage.

Valmiera
Valmiera’s landmarks include the Church of Saint Simon in Valmiera and Valmiera Castle. The city’s cultural life is represented by the Valmiera Drama Theatre, while Valmiera District adds a broader local perspective to the route.

Gulbene
Gulbene offers a smaller route centred on two narrated places: Gulbene Lutheran church and Gulbene Municipality. The pairing introduces both a religious landmark and a civic one, giving a concise overview of the town.
The Gulbene guide is a straightforward option for travellers who want to include another Vidzeme town in their itinerary.
Planning a trip through Vidzeme
