What to See in Kaliningrad
Königsberg Cathedral and Immanuel Kant Island
Königsberg Cathedral stands on Kneiphof Island, officially known today as Immanuel Kant Island, in Kaliningrad’s historic centre. It is one of the few substantial Gothic buildings preserved from the former city of Königsberg and one of the few Gothic structures in Russia built in Brick Gothic, also known as Baltic Gothic.
The red-brick cathedral was built in the fourteenth century as the seat of the Prince-Bishops of Samland. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Adalbert of Prague, later becoming the principal Catholic church of Königsberg before serving as the Lutheran church of Albertina University from 1544.
Bombing raids in late August 1944 destroyed its roof and spire. Reconstruction began in 1992, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Today, the restored cathedral is one of the most important surviving links to the city that existed before modern Kaliningrad.
Kaliningrad’s historic gates and fortifications
Kaliningrad’s surviving defensive buildings reveal the scale and character of Königsberg’s military past.
The King’s Gate is a compact, castle-like structure with a pseudo-Gothic design. Built between 1843 and 1850, it formed part of the nineteenth-century fortifications. Three sandstone figures stand above the west façade: Bohemian King Ottokar the Second, King Frederick the First of Prussia and Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach. The gate now houses the Historical and Cultural Center called the Great Embassy, a branch of the Museum of the World Ocean.
The Friedland Gate, beside South Park, is one of Kaliningrad’s eight surviving city gates. The present brick structure dates from 1852 and replaced a wooden gate built in 1657. Its former garrison accommodation and outer defensive structures remain visible, while its two passageways are sealed with masonry.
At Fort Friedrichsburg, the surviving Friedrichsburg Gate is the only remaining part of a former citadel on the Pregel. It was never a city gate, despite its appearance and role within the fortress system. Today, it is a branch of the Museum of the World Ocean and a cultural heritage site of federal importance in Russia.
The Kronprinz Barracks form a long defensive complex on Litovsky Val Street. Built in 1849, the U-shaped structure includes a massive tower bearing the name “Kronprinz” in large letters. The fortification was originally surrounded by a moat connected with the Oberteich.
Other military landmarks include Wrangel Tower, one of the fortifications associated with Königsberg, and Fort Number 11, Denkhoff, one of the twelve main forts in the defensive ring known as the Night’s Featherbed. Built between 1877 and 1881, Fort Number 11 is now a private museum and is among Kaliningrad’s best-preserved fortifications.
Queen Louise Rotunda
The Queen Louise Rotunda is connected with a former memorial to Queen Louise of Prussia. The monument once stood in the Lusalt garden, later known as the Imperial Park Luisenwahl, in the Hufen district of Königsberg.
Königsberg citizens commissioned an exedra bench with a pergola and ornamental vases. At its centre, a bust of Queen Louise was set into a medallion, creating a carefully arranged memorial within the park. The rotunda offers a quieter way to encounter the city’s Prussian heritage beyond its major fortifications.
Kaliningrad Zoo
The Kaliningrad Zoo combines living nature with remnants of the city’s past. Its grounds preserve rare plants, sculptures, historic structures and a fountain connected with the earlier history of Königsberg.
The zoo opened in 1896 as the Königsberg Tiergarten. It was created through the efforts of Maximilian Braun, a professor at the University of Königsberg, Hermann Klaass, an entrepreneur in the dental industry, and other figures from local business, science, the arts and municipal life.
Among the sculptures are a statue of the minnesinger Walter von der Vogelweide, installed in 1931, a monument to Hermann Klaass and an orangutan by sculptor Arthur Steiner. The entrance is decorated with animal portraits, including a penguin, seal, bear, leopard, mountain goat and griffon vulture.
Church of the Holy Family
The Church of the Holy Family is a neo-Gothic brick church in the former Königsberg district of Haberberg, near the Pregel River. Built between 1904 and 1907 for the Catholic population arriving in Königsberg, it was designed by Friedrich Heitmann.
The church is a three-aisled brick hall with a lower, five-sided chancel and a 57-metre tower. Inside, a star-vaulted ceiling rests on slender, octagonal granite pillars. The building survived the Second World War almost entirely intact, although shelling damaged the upper part of its tower.
Today, the former church serves as the concert hall of the Kaliningrad Regional Philharmonic. It was restored between 1978 and 1980 after earlier use as a military hospital and warehouse.
Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Arts
Beside the Lower Pond, the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Arts occupies the former Königsberg Stadthalle. Designed by Berlin architect Richard Seel, the multi-purpose hall was completed in 1912 for concerts and public events.
The Stadthalle had the largest event halls in Königsberg and could accommodate 1,600 seated guests. Its rooms were named after people involved in the project, including Siegfried Körte, Theodor Krohne and Carl Julius Gebauhr. A restaurant and garden café once stood in front of the Schlossteich.
The building was badly damaged during the air raids on Königsberg on August 26, 1944. Its present role as a regional museum adds another chapter to the history of this surviving public building.
The Museum of the World Ocean’s ships
Kaliningrad’s maritime history is especially vivid at the Museum of the World Ocean, where several preserved vessels form part of the city’s waterfront heritage.
B-413 is a Soviet diesel-electric submarine belonging to Project 641. It served with the Northern Fleet’s 96th Submarine Brigade from 1969 to 1990, making long voyages in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. After leaving active service in 1999, it became part of the museum collection and has been displayed at the museum’s pier since 2000.
SRT-129 is a Soviet fishing trawler moored at the Historical Fleet Embankment. Built in the German Democratic Republic, it was launched on October 1, 1950, and accepted into service on January 4, 1951. Since 2007, it has been preserved as a museum ship. It is described as the only museum fishing vessel in Russia.
The Irbenskiy is a former Soviet and Russian lightship preserved at the Peter the Great Embankment. It served as a floating lighthouse and is considered one of the last inhabited floating lighthouses built in the world.
