Starý zámok: Banská Štiavnica’s Old Castle

Starý zámok, or the Old Castle, stands in the heart of the town at the foot of Paradajs hill. It began as a parish church before being rebuilt and heavily fortified at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The result is a preserved defensive complex also known as Mestský hrad, or the City Castle.

The Church of St. Catherine

The late Gothic Church of St. Catherine, known locally as Kostol svätej Kataríny, is also called the “Slovak Church”. Since 1658, sermons have been preached here in Slovak. Before that, religious services in the region would have been held in Latin or German.

Inside and outside, the church displays characteristic late Gothic details, including pointed arches and strong vertical lines. It is one of the most important religious buildings to include when considering what to see in Banská Štiavnica.

The Evangelical church

Banská Štiavnica’s Evangelical church, or Evanjelický kostol, is the only functioning Protestant place of worship in the town. It continues to serve the local Lutheran community and adds another layer to the religious history visible in the historic center.

The former synagogue and ERB brewery

On Novozámocká Street, the former synagogue illustrates how one building can carry several chapters of local history. The structure probably began in the Gothic period, was later rebuilt in Renaissance style, and was converted into a synagogue in 1893 with the support of Banská Štiavnica’s Jewish community.

Religious activity was forcibly suspended in 1941. The building later became a locksmith’s workshop and a driving school before being reconstructed in the early 2000s. Today, its vaulted spaces house the ERB brewery. The site is one of the more unusual things to do in Banská Štiavnica: a former place of worship now used for local craft beer production.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is one of the two oldest churches in Banská Štiavnica. It began as a Romanesque basilica in the 1230s, and traces of that early core remain beneath later additions.

The church is still an active Roman Catholic parish church, connecting the town’s earliest architectural history with its present-day community.

Nový zámok: the New Castle

Despite its name, Nový zámok is not a palace or a noble residence. It is a six-story Renaissance fortress with four corner bastions, built between 1564 and 1571 as a watchtower against Ottoman raids.

The fortress formed part of a chain of signal towers known as vartovky, which allowed warnings to pass across central Slovakia. Its thick walls and narrow loopholes reveal its military purpose. For more than a century, a trumpeter sounded a call every quarter hour from the tower, while a bell marked each hour for the town below.

Today, Nový zámok houses the Slovak Mining Museum. Its exhibition explains the fortress’s original defensive role and the signaling system to which it belonged. A viewing platform at the top offers a panorama over Banská Štiavnica and the surrounding landscape.

Our Lady of the Snow church

The Church of Our Lady of the Snow, also known locally as the Frauenberský kostol, is a modest building with a history reaching back to the sixteenth century. It served as a Catholic place of worship for generations and forms part of the town’s rich collection of historic churches.

Arboretum Kysihybel

A short distance from the historic town, Arboretum Kysihybel lies on the slopes of the Štiavnické vrchy. It was established in 1900, when József Tuzson, an assistant at the forestry academy in Banská Štiavnica, began planting trees from distant regions to study how foreign species adapted to local conditions.

The arboretum now covers seven and a half hectares and has the highest level of state protection. Its collection includes exotic conifers and broadleaf trees from North America, Asia and other parts of Europe, growing alongside native forest. The mature trees and quiet paths make it a place for slow observation beyond the historic center.
