West Coast National Park

West Coast National Park is one of the most important places to visit near Langebaan. The protected coastal area stretches from Yzerfontein in the south to the Langebaan Lagoon, with the Atlantic Ocean forming its western boundary.

The park brings together open coastal landscapes, rich birdlife and seasonal displays of spring flowers. Flowers are especially prominent in the Postberg section from August to September, when the landscape takes on a different character. Proclaimed in 1985, the park covers about 36,300 hectares and forms part of the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve, included in the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme.

The reserve was developed on a former wheat farm, placing the presentation of San history and contemporary life within a natural landscape. !Khwa ttu began in 1999 through the work of the Working Group of Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa and the South African San Institute, with support from Swiss anthropologist Irène Staehelin and the Ubuntu Foundation. It opened to the public in 2006.

Stadsaal Caves

The Stadsaal Caves are known for their sandstone caves, overhangs and unusual rock formations in the Cederberg. The name Stadsaal, also written Stadtsaal, means “town hall”.

Erosion of the lower sandstone layers created the distinctive forms found at the site. Prehistoric rock paintings add a human history to this striking geological setting.

Elands Bay Cave

Cape Colony

The settlement gradually grew into a colony as Dutch settlers and later French, German and English immigrants arrived. Britain occupied the Cape in 1795 during the Napoleonic Wars, returned it to the Batavian Republic in 1803, and occupied it again in 1806 after the Battle of Blaauwberg. British possession was confirmed in 1814, and the colony remained under British rule until 1910.

Political power changed over time too. The governor initially held most authority, while colonists gradually gained more influence from 1834. In 1872, the Imperial government lost its veto over local legislation.

Dutch Reformed Church, Piketberg

The Dutch Reformed Church in Piketberg belongs to one of the oldest Dutch Reformed congregations between Malmesbury and Clanwilliam. Its history reaches back to 1833, while the present building was consecrated in 1882.

Designed by Carl Otto Hager, the church stands on the same site as the earlier cross-shaped building. Inside, the handcrafted pulpit was carved from imported Indian wood, Yellowwood and Oregon pine.

Dutch Reformed Church, Redelinghuys

The Dutch Reformed Church in Redelinghuys, also known as the NG Kerk Redelinghuys, stands at the heart of this Sandveld village. Its congregation separated from the mother congregation of Piketberg on 26 April 1906, one day after the Aurora congregation.

Because of this close timing, Redelinghuys and Aurora are sometimes called the twins of Piketberg. The congregation belongs to the Western Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church.
