Walter Anderson Museum of Art
The Walter Anderson Museum of Art is dedicated to Walter Inglis Anderson, whose work brings Mississippi Gulf Coast plants, animals, landscapes, and people to life. The museum also preserves work by his brothers, Peter Anderson and James McConnell Anderson.
The museum grew from a local effort to protect Walter Anderson’s art and culture. The Friends of Walter Anderson was chartered in 1974, and the museum was dedicated on May 4, 1991. Its mission is to encourage lifelong curiosity and a connection with the natural world through Anderson’s art and the work of other artists connected to similar ideas.
The building itself is part of the experience. Conceptual architect Edward Pickard designed it in the style of the Shearwater compound. That design reflects the Anderson family’s artistic history: Peter Anderson founded Shearwater Pottery, while James Anderson was a painter and ceramist.
One of the museum’s most distinctive features is the meeting of two very different sides of Walter Anderson’s work. The large public murals from the Ocean Springs Community Center are presented alongside the more private Little Room murals, creating an immersive view of his artistic world.
Saint John’s Episcopal Church
At the northwest corner of Rayburn and Porter Avenue stands Saint John’s Episcopal Church, a historic landmark in Ocean Springs. Built in 1892, it was designed by New York architect Manly N. Cutter.
The church was added to the National Register in 1987. Its age and architectural history make it a notable stop while exploring Ocean Springs, particularly for visitors interested in the town’s historic buildings.
