Dürnstein Castle Ruins

Rising to 312 metres above sea level, the Dürnstein Castle Ruins (Burgruine Dürnstein) stand on the rocky heights above the town. Built in the mid-12th century by Hadmar I of Kuenring after the family acquired the land from Tegernsee Abbey, the fortress is famous for holding England’s King Richard the Lionheart captive from December 1192 to February 1894. Captured in Erdberg near Vienna by Duke Leopold V, Richard was eventually freed for a ransom of 150,000 marks of silver. The site also features a chapel dedicated to the Apostle John, first mentioned in 1306.

Stift Dürnstein

Stift Dürnstein is immediately recognized by its distinctive blue-and-white Baroque church tower, which serves as a Wachau landmark. The religious site began as a chapel in 1372, gained a crypt in 1400, and became an Augustinian Canons monastery in 1410. Baroque rebuilding between 1710 and later was shaped by provost Hieronymus Übelbacher and architects including Jakob Prandtauer, Joseph Munggenast, and Matthias Steinl. The church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, has served as the parish church since 1745.

Further up on the Sandl, the Weiglwarte observation tower reaches 15.6 metres in height on a summit rising 723 metres above sea level. Opened in 1901 and built by master builder Josef Utz, it was named after Augustin Weigl, known as the father of tourism in the Wachau, replacing an earlier 1881 wooden shelter built by the Austrian Alpine Club.
