Explore the island’s landscapes and history
Troodos Mountains
The Troodos spread across much of the south and west, forming the island’s great rugged backbone. Their rock originated as molten material beneath the Mediterranean Sea before being lifted into its current shape. The highest point, Mount Olympus, reaches nearly 2,000 metres.
Kyrenia Range
Along the northern coast runs the narrower Kyrenia Range, a limestone ridge that rises abruptly from the plain. Its eastern tip extends into the Karpas Peninsula, pointing toward Asia Minor. One summit resembles five fingers, giving the range the alternative name Pentadactylon.
Mesaoria plain and Nicosia
Between the two mountain ranges lies the Mesaoria, the broad central plain where the capital Nicosia stands. This area has long been the island’s agricultural heart, relying on water captured from winter rivers that flow down from the Troodos but dry up in summer.
Karpas Peninsula
The slender Karpas Peninsula stretches eastward from the Kyrenia Range, offering a quieter coastline and a landscape that still bears traces of traditional rural life.
Akrotiri and Dhekelia
On the southern coast, the areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia remain under British sovereignty for military purposes, creating a unique political enclave within the island.
Copper deposits
Antiquity miners exploited rich copper deposits on the slopes of the Troodos Mountains. These ore bodies formed beneath the sea before tectonic forces raised the rock into the mountains, linking Cyprus’s geological past to its early wealth.
Forests and woodland
Considerable woodland survives in the Troodos and Kyrenia ranges, featuring pine, cedar, cypress and oak. Ancient writers noted that much of the island, including the Mesaoria plain, was once heavily forested, though timber demand for sailing vessels reduced those stands over time.
Vegetation and shrubs
Away from the forests, the landscape shifts to tall shrubs such as golden oak, strawberry tree, olive and styrax. Much of the untilled ground supports low, grazed bushes, which can become stunted herbs under heavy grazing pressure.
Climate and water
Rain falls mainly from November to March, giving the island hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Altitude creates cooler, wetter conditions in the mountains, while the coastal lowlands stay warmer and drier—a constant reminder of the island’s long‑term search for water.
