Our Lady of Grace Cathedral
This building serves as the main Maronite church of Nicosia and the cathedral of the Maronite Catholic Archeparchy of Cyprus, anchoring the city’s Maronite community.

Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre
Located in the heart of the city, the arts centre functions as a museum where visitors can pause and engage with contemporary and historical artworks.

Famagusta Gate
Known locally as Mağusa Kapısı and Porta Giuliana, this Venetian gate was the chief entrance to Nicosia during the 16th century. Built under the direction of Count Giulio, it features a vaulted passage wide enough for two vehicles, a spherical dome about eleven metres in diameter, and a circular opening that recalls the Pantheon. The outer façade incorporates a small arch set into the Caraffa Bastion, some of whose stones show wear.

Faneromeni Church in Nicosia
Standing within the ancient city walls, Faneromeni is the largest church inside the fortifications. Erected in 1872 on the site of a former Greek Orthodox convent, it overlooks Faneromeni Square, which gathers several historic monuments. The church garden contains a marble monument to the Greek rebels of 1821, placed there by the Ottoman governor Küçük Mehmed.

Leventio Museum (Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia)
Housed in a three‑storey neoclassical stone building near the Trypiotis parish, the museum traces Nicosia’s story from the Chalcolithic period (circa 3900 BC) to the present. Its collections include archaeological artefacts, medieval pottery, costumes, photographs, maps, engravings, jewellery and furniture. The museum was awarded European Museum of the Year in 1991.

Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios Mansion (Konak)
This historic house in the Saint Antonios neighbourhood has been converted into the Cyprus Ethnological Museum. The transformation preserved its architectural character while giving it a new role as a museum of local customs and traditions.

Leventis Gallery (A. G. Leventis Gallery)
Opened in January 2013 after an RIBA‑run design competition, the gallery displays more than 800 paintings by Cypriot, Greek and European artists. The building was designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and includes a restaurant and housing for the Leventis Foundation.

Paphos Gate
As the western entrance of the Venetian walls, Paphos Gate (also called St Dominic Gate) led toward the town of Paphos and the western part of the island. It likely stands near a medieval Lusignan castle and monastery. During British rule the barracks above the gate were the first place on Cyprus where the Union Flag was raised, and later sections of the wall were demolished to create additional passages.

Cyprus Museum
Situated on Museum Street, this is the oldest and largest archaeological museum in Cyprus. Opened in 1882, it holds the most extensive collection of Cypriot antiquities in the world, presenting finds from excavations across the island and reflecting the development of modern archaeology on the island.

Old Nicosia Aqueduct
Dating to the Ottoman period in the eighteenth century, this stone aqueduct once carried water from the Kyrenia Gate in the north to the Famagusta Gate in the east, feeding fountains throughout the inner city. A section known as the Silahtar Aqueduct survives today; during recent demolition work eleven arches were uncovered inside a newer structure, showing considerable decay. Nearby stands Saint Anthony Church, another landmark of the historic quarter.

Nicosia (general)
Referred to locally as Lefkosia or Lefkoşa, Nicosia has been continuously inhabited for over 5,500 years and has served as Cyprus’s capital since the tenth century. Known in antiquity as Ledra, the city passed through Frankish, Venetian, Ottoman and British hands. Its historic centre remains enclosed by the Venetian walls, whose bastions and gates continue to shape the urban landscape and house important civic buildings such as the Town Hall.

THOC Theater (Cyprus National Theatre)
The THOC Theater, whose Greek name is Θέατρο Θ.Ο.Κ., is the national theatre of Cyprus and a venue for drama, dance and musical performances.

Archbishop Makarios III Foundation Art Galleries
Adjacent to the Archbishop’s Palace—a neo‑Byzantine residence built between 1956 and 1960—the foundation’s cultural centre hosts four art galleries. The palace grounds once displayed a massive bronze statue of Makarios III, the first president of Cyprus, which now resides at Kykkos Monastery.

Omeriye Mosque
Located in the southern part of the walled city, Ömeriye Mosque occupies the site of a former Augustinian monastery and the church of Saint Mary. Converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of 1571, it remains an active place of worship while welcoming visitors.

Bayraktar Mosque
Also known as Bairaktar Mosque, this stone building in the southern sector of Nicosia commemorates a sixteenth‑century flag‑bearer, though it was constructed by the Ottomans in the nineteenth century. The mosque is well preserved, surrounded by a spacious garden, and stands near remnants of the historic city walls.
