Things to Do in Johor Bahru: What to See in Malaysia’s Southern Capital
Johor Bahru is the capital of Johor, at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula, facing Singapore across the Tebrau Strait. The city combines royal history, historic buildings, museums, religious landmarks and a busy urban setting, making it worth exploring beyond its role as a commercial and cross-border centre. Neywo offers a free audio guide for Johor Bahru with 47 narrated places.
Johor Bahru is widely known as JB. Its development accelerated during the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar, from 1886 to 1895, when a fishing village grew into an administrative centre with government offices, schools and railway connections to Woodlands in Singapore. The city later became important in the political history of Malaya: Japanese forces occupied it during the Pacific War, and UMNO was formed at the Istana Besar in 1946.
Today, Johor Bahru is one of Malaysia’s major centres for finance, business, industry, trade and tourism. Its connections with Singapore, Senai International Airport and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas reinforce its role as a commercial and logistics hub in southern Malaysia.

Johor Grand Palace
Also known as Istana Besar, Johor Grand Palace is one of the palaces of the Sultan of Johor. It served as the official residence of the sultan until Istana Bukit Serene was completed and became his residential palace. The palace is also closely connected with Johor’s political history: UMNO was formed here in 1946.
Figure Museum
The Figure Museum, also known as Muzium Tokoh Johor and Bangunan Dato Jaafar, occupies the former residence of Dato Jaafar. The building is described as 135 years old, giving the museum a direct connection with Johor’s past and with one of the figures associated with the state’s history.

At Bukit Timbalan, the Sultan Ibrahim Building is a prominent historic landmark. Also known as Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim, it was once Johor’s state secretariat building. Construction took place between 1936 and 1939, and the building was completed in 1940 during an effort to streamline the state administration.
The building was officially opened by Sultan Ibrahim of Johor. The state secretariat offices have since moved to Kota Iskandar, and there are plans to convert the former administrative centre into a museum.
Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque
Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque stands on a hill beside the Tebrau Strait and serves as the state mosque of Johor. Built between 1892 and 1900 under the direction of Sultan Abu Bakar, it was officially opened in 1900 by Sultan Ibrahim, the son of the sultan it commemorates.
Its square plan has four projecting verandas, each crowned by a domed minaret. The design combines Islamic architectural features with Victorian influence. The four minarets have square lower sections, round upper sections and domes, with influences from the White Mosque in Terengganu and architectural traditions from West Asia, especially Egypt.
Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Its modern, futuristic character distinguishes it from the older royal and civic buildings in central Johor Bahru. The mosque was officially opened on 16 June 2015 and named after Sultan Iskandar, the twenty-fourth and fourth Sultan of Johor.
