What to See in George Town

Fort Cornwallis

Built in 1786 by the British East India Company, Fort Cornwallis is a four-pointed star-shaped bastion fort at Padang Kota Lama, in the northeastern part of Penang Island. It was constructed in response to possible enemy threats during the Napoleonic Wars, although that danger never materialised. Today, it is recognised as the largest standing fort in Malaysia.

Penang State Museum and Art Gallery

The Penang State Museum and Art Gallery, or Muzium dan Balai Seni Lukis Negeri Pulau Pinang, is one of George Town’s cultural attractions. It brings together the city’s museum and art-gallery traditions in a place worth including in a heritage itinerary.

Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower

At Victoria Green, the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower combines an open green space with a monument dedicated to Queen Victoria. The grounds were established in 1903 at the Penang Chinese Recreation Club, while the statue was unveiled in 1930. The two parts of the memorial therefore belong to different moments in its history.

Kapitan Keling Mosque

Kapitan Keling Mosque stands at the centre of George Town’s Tamil Muslim neighbourhood and forms part of the city’s World Heritage Site. Indian Muslim traders established the mosque’s history in the early nineteenth century, after Cauder Mohudeen received land for a mosque in 1801.

The present appearance reflects changes made over time. An earlier building was replaced in 1916, and a major renovation in 1930 enlarged the structure and improved its ventilation and natural light. Its ochre-yellow exterior contrasts with white marble floors inside, while horseshoe arches shape the aisles beneath a high ceiling.

Lebuh Aceh Mosque

Also known as Acheen Street Mosque, Lebuh Aceh Mosque is at the heart of a historic Muslim settlement. The Acehnese aristocrat Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid established the settlement in 1792 and donated land for the mosque in 1808.

The community grew around houses, shops and a madrasah for Quranic studies, becoming a centre of Islamic learning in Penang. The cemetery beside the mosque contains the grave of Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid and members of his family. Together, the mosque, cemetery and surrounding houses preserve the memory of this earlier community.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is one of George Town’s most recognisable buildings, thanks to its indigo-blue walls and richly decorated exterior. Often called the Blue Mansion, it now functions as both a hotel and a museum.

The merchant Cheong Fatt Tze built it at the end of the nineteenth century as a private residence and business centre. The mansion has 38 rooms, five granite-paved courtyards, seven staircases and 220 timber louvred windows. Its design combines Imperial Chinese architecture with European details, including Gothic windows, metal balustrades, Art Nouveau stained glass and geometric floor tiles from Stoke on Trent. The layout was also planned according to Feng Shui principles.

Kong Hock Keong Temple

Kong Hock Keong Temple, better known as the Goddess of Mercy Temple or Kuan Im Teng, was built on Pitt Street in 1800. It is described as the oldest Chinese temple in Penang and remains an important place of worship.

The temple was originally dedicated to Mazu, the sea deity. As Chinese migration to George Town increased after the settlement’s establishment in 1786, its focus changed to Guan Yin, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Mercy. Taoist deities are also honoured there, giving the temple a layered religious tradition.

Han Jiang Ancestral Temple

Han Jiang Ancestral Temple is a Teochew ancestral temple and the only Chinese temple in George Town built entirely in the Teochew architectural style. Managed by the Penang Teochew Association, it is an important symbol of the city’s Teochew community.

The front hall centres on Xuan Tian Shangdi, alongside other deities including Guan Gong, the Earth God and the City God. The rear hall honours Teochew ancestors. After a major restoration between 2003 and 2005, the project received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award in 2006.

Museums across George Town

George Town has several smaller museums that add detail to the city’s cultural history. The Batik Painting Museum Penang focuses on batik painting, while the Camera Museum is dedicated to cameras. The Penang Islamic Museum explores Islam in George Town.

The Sun Yat-sen Museum Penang presents the revolutionary story of Sun Yat-sen and the Xinhai Revolution. Its building, constructed around 1880, was once a merchant’s residence in the Straits Settlements and later housed the Penang Reading Room. The P. Ramlee House, a wooden house on Jalan P. Ramlee, commemorates the Malaysian singer, actor, composer and director. Inside are a diary, personal memorabilia and belongings connected with his family.

Kek Lok Si Temple

In Ayer Itam, Kek Lok Si Temple is one of Penang’s most important Buddhist landmarks and a major pilgrimage centre for Buddhists from across Southeast Asia. The complex began taking shape around 1890 through the initiative of its abbot, Beow Lean, and developed over several decades.

It is recognised as the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. Its most distinctive structure is the seven-storey Ten Thousand Buddhas Pagoda, which contains ten thousand alabaster and bronze Buddha statues. Nearby is a 36.57-metre bronze statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy.

Penang Toy Museum

In Teluk Bahang, the Penang Toy Museum contains more than 110,000 toys, dolls and collectible items. Opened in 2005, it covers 1,000 square metres and was recognised by the Malaysian Book of Records as Malaysia’s first toy museum. Its large collection is recognised as the largest toy museum in the world.
