What to see in Zeeland

Landscape and the struggle against water

Zeeland consists of islands, peninsulas and a river delta where the Scheldt, Rhine and Meuse reach the sea; much of the land lies below sea level. Over time inhabitants reclaimed it from the water, turning a landscape that flooded at high tide and reappeared at low tide into a chain of small man‑made hills that stayed dry.

Coat of arms and motto

Zeeland’s coat of arms shows a lion half‑emerged from water, accompanied by the words luctor et emergo (“I struggle and emerge”).

The 1953 flood and the Delta Works

In 1953 a catastrophic North Sea flood killed more than 1,800 people in Zeeland, prompting the construction of the protective Delta Works.

Zeelandic Flanders: the mainland part

Only Zeelandic Flanders, along the Belgian border, is not an island or peninsula. It belonged to the county of Flanders under Habsburg rule before being conquered by the United Provinces and becoming known as Staats‑Vlaanderen.

Medieval contests and the rise of the Dutch Republic

Until 1299 the area lay between the ambitions of the counts of Holland and Flanders; control later passed through Burgundy and the Habsburgs. During the Eighty Years’ War Zeeland sided with the Union of Utrecht and became one of the United Provinces.

The Eighty Years’ War and the Union of Utrecht

Zeeland’s participation in the Union of Utrecht marked its role in the foundation of the Dutch Republic.

From Habsburg rule to the United Kingdom of the Netherlands

After French occupation and the formation of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815, the present province of Zeeland was formed.

World War II: Battle of the Scheldt and Walcheren

Nazi Germany occupied Zeeland during the Second World War. The Battle of the Scheldt and the Walcheren Landings devastated the province, with Walcheren being inundated during the fighting.

In 1642 Dutch navigator Abel Tasman sighted the islands that would become New Zealand, first naming them Staten Landt. Dutch authorities later gave them the Latin name Nova Zeelandia and the Dutch name Nieuw Zeeland, which Captain James Cook anglicised to New Zealand.

Seaports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen

Zeeland still operates seaports at Vlissingen and Terneuzen, linking the province to maritime trade.

Summer beaches and seasonal visitors

Zeeland’s summer beaches attract visitors, especially from Germany, and in some localities the population swells several times during the high season.

Zeeland’s place names around the world

The province’s name lives on abroad; Flushing in New York is named after Vlissingen, and various localities in Canada, the United States and Tobago also bear names linked to Zeeland.
