Kaimai Air Crash Memorial
The Kaimai Air Crash Memorial commemorates New Zealand National Airways Corporation Flight 441, one of New Zealand’s aviation tragedies.
On 3 July 1963, the flight was travelling from Whenuapai in Auckland to Tauranga. At about 9:09 in the morning, the Douglas DC-3 Skyliner flew into a vertical rock face in the Kaimai Ranges near Mount Ngatamahinerua, at an altitude of 750 metres. Twenty-three people were on board. Twenty-two died instantly, while evidence indicates that one person survived the impact but died shortly afterwards. Three additional passengers had been expected on the flight but changed their plans at the last minute.
The memorial is a place for quiet remembrance within the Kaimai Ranges. The nearby destinations of Tauranga and Rotorua offer other ways to continue exploring the surrounding part of New Zealand.
