Central Visayas travel guide
Central Visayas is shaped by water. The Cebu Strait runs through the region, with the Visayan Sea to the north, the Bohol Sea to the south, and the Camotes Sea to the east. Cebu and Bohol are connected to the wider island world by ports, while Mactan Cebu International Airport and Bohol Panglao International Airport provide air connections.
Cebu City is the regional center and the largest city in Central Visayas. It gives the region a strong urban heart, while the surrounding islands and coastal communities make movement part of everyday life. Sea lanes, ports, cities, and separate islands all meet here.
The region has only two provinces but a population of more than 6.6 million people. Its boundaries have changed over time. Central Visayas was formed in 1972 with Cebu, Bohol, and Negros Oriental. Negros Oriental later moved in and out of the region as the Negros Island Region was created, dissolved, and re-established. In 2024, Negros Oriental moved again, and Siquijor joined the Negros Island Region. Central Visayas now consists of Cebu and Bohol.
The name refers to the islands’ central position in the Visayas. Another proposed name, Sugbu, connects the region with the former Rajahnate of Cebu and the Cebuano name for Cebu.
Cebuano is the shared language of everyday life in Cebu and Bohol. Boholano is spoken in Bohol, while Bantayanon is used on Bantayan Island and Porohanon in the Camotes Islands of Cebu. Cebu City is also the region’s media hub, with local branches of national networks and newspapers including SunStar Cebu, Cebu Daily News, and The Freeman.
