Understand the landscape of Negros

The geography of the Negros Island Region is shaped by surrounding waters, broad plains and mountain ranges. Negros is largely volcanic, while extensive sugarcane plantations dominate its flatlands. This agricultural landscape has earned the island a reputation as a sugarcane powerhouse.

A mountain range runs through central Negros and separates its western and eastern halves. At its highest point stands Kanlaon, one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes. Its summit reaches about 2,465 metres, making it the highest peak in the Visayas island group.

The region’s uplands also include the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao and Danao, recognized as the first ASEAN Heritage Park in the Visayas. The lakes are valued for their biodiversity and their importance as a watershed. In northern Negros, extensive mountain forests are protected within a natural park.

Along the coast, beaches and islets add a different landscape to the island. Apo Island, off Negros Oriental, is one of the region’s notable coastal destinations. The contrast between sugarcane plains, forested mountains and surrounding seas is one of the defining features of Negros Island Region travel.

The story behind the Negros Island Region

The region’s creation reflects a long campaign to bring the provinces and islands of the area under one shared administration. Officials on both sides of Negros had supported a one-island, one-region arrangement for decades.

The first Negros Island Region united Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental and Bacolod. It separated Negros Occidental and Bacolod from Western Visayas, and Negros Oriental from Central Visayas. That arrangement was later abolished, with the cost of maintaining the region cited as a concern.

The proposal returned through new efforts, a bill and renewed political support. In June 2024, the Negros Island Region was established again, this time with Siquijor included. Its return reflects how persistent the campaign for a shared regional administration has been.
