What to See in San Juan: Fortresses, Museums and Historic Landmarks
Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Commonly known as El Morro, this colossal fortress stands on a steep, rocky headland at the entrance to San Juan Bay, guarding the harbor for nearly five centuries. Commissioned by King Charles I of Spain in 1539 and expanded under King Philip II and King Charles III, the structure rises 43 meters from the Atlantic shoreline with walls between 5.5 and 7.6 meters thick across six levels.
Castillo San Cristóbal
Rising about 150 feet above the Atlantic shoreline, this massive fortress guards the land entry to Old San Juan. Built starting in 1634 following earlier English and Dutch attacks, it was designed specifically to defend the city from land assaults and features the famous Garita del Diablo sentry box.
La Fortaleza
Also known as the Palacio de Santa Catalina, this remarkable building serves as the official residence and workplace of the Governor of Puerto Rico. Built as a medieval fortress between 1533 and 1540 by orders of King Charles I, it is the oldest executive seat in continuous use in the New World.
Ballajá Barracks and Museo de las Américas
Built between 1854 and 1864, the grand Ballajá Barracks were the last large-scale construction project undertaken by the Spanish Crown in the Americas. Today, the building houses the Museo de las Américas, a multidisciplinary museum featuring permanent exhibitions on popular arts, African heritage, indigenous history, and the colonization of the Puerto Rican nation.
Cathedral of San Juan Bautista
Located on Calle del Cristo in the historic district, the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist is the oldest purpose-built cathedral building in the Americas and the second-oldest existing cathedral on the continent.
Galería Nacional
Housed in a beautifully restored Dominican monastery originally known as the Convent of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the National Gallery holds the island’s largest collection of Puerto Rican paintings spanning from the eighteenth century through the 1960s, featuring works by artists such as José Campeche and Francisco Oller.
