Zhang Family Ancestral Shrine

Also known locally as Faxiang Hall, the Zhang Family Ancestral Shrine is a city-protected monument in Xitun District. Built in 1904, it remains privately owned and functions as a family ancestral hall, with ancestral tablets in the main hall.

Its side wings, called the inner and outer protective corridors, add an unusual detail to the building’s history. They served as living quarters for family members, and some rooms were later rented to outsiders.

Dajia Jenn Lann Temple

Dajia Jenn Lann Temple, or Dajia Mazu Temple, is one of Taiwan’s most important places of Mazu worship. Located in Dajia District, it is dedicated to Mazu, the deity associated with the sea and with fishermen and sailors.

The temple is also the starting point of the annual Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage. Visiting it offers an introduction to a living religious tradition that brings huge crowds together every year.

Taichung City Second Market

For food-focused things to do in Taichung, Taichung City Second Market is an essential stop. This traditional public market in the Central District has served locals and visitors for more than a century.

Its main building has a distinctive hexagonal form, with three wings extending outward in a star-like layout. The market contains around 54 shops, about 200 permanent stalls, and roughly 100 temporary stalls. It was built in 1917 during Japanese rule, when it was known as Shintomichō Market. A temple, Wude Palace, was established inside the market in 1946 and is still present today.

Taichung Literature Museum

The Taichung Literature Museum, also known as Taichung Literature Park, occupies a group of former police dormitories in the West District. The buildings date from 1932, when they housed officers of the Taichung Prefectural Police Department.

The Taichung City Government registered them as historical buildings in 2009. Restoration and adaptive reuse began in 2010, giving the Japanese-era dormitories a new role as a cultural space dedicated to literature. The setting is particularly peaceful for a museum in the city.

Taichung City Sugar Factory

The Taichung City Sugar Factory brings together industrial history and a restored urban landscape. The site was established in 1912 by the Taiwan Sugar Corporation during the Japanese colonial era and became one of central Taiwan’s major sugar-production facilities.

Production ended in November 1990, after which most of the factory buildings were demolished. The former business office is the only original structure still standing. Restored and officially renamed the Taichung Imperial Sugar Factory Business Office in 2019, it now forms part of Lakeside Ecological Park, whose grounds include an ecological pond and green spaces.

Taichung Metropolitan Opera House

The Taichung Metropolitan Opera House is one of the city’s most distinctive modern buildings. Located in the 7th Redevelopment Zone of Xitun District, the complex includes a Grand Theater with 2,007 seats, a medium theater with 794 seats, a smaller theater with 200 seats, and an outdoor theater.

The venue also has dining spaces and a rooftop garden. Its construction faced difficulties because of the complexity of the design, and the building eventually opened officially on September 30, 2016. Even without attending a performance, the architecture makes it a notable place to visit.

Fengjia Night Market

Fengjia Night Market is one of Taiwan’s largest and best-known night markets. It is located beside Feng Chia University in Xitun District and spreads around Wenhua Road and Fuxing Road, extending into nearby streets and shopping areas.

The market began in 1963, after Feng Chia University moved to its current campus. Food stalls and shops first appeared along Wenhua Road to serve students, and the area gradually expanded through the 1980s into a large dining and shopping district.

921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan

The 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan in Wufeng District preserves the site and evidence of the magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck central Taiwan at 1:47 a.m. on September 21, 1999.

The museum was built on the grounds of the former Guangfu Junior High School, where the earthquake caused severe damage. Parts of the school were preserved, including damaged classrooms and the fault cross-section. The Chelungpu Fault Gallery crosses the fault line itself, allowing visitors to see the displaced rock layers and the physical effects of the earthquake.

Museum of Fiber Arts, Taichung

Located in Dali Sports Park, the Museum of Fiber Arts, Taichung is dedicated to fiber craft. It opened in 2016 as the first public museum established by the Taichung City Government.

Its themes include weaving, knotting, braiding, dyeing, and embroidery, bringing traditional craft and contemporary art together in one museum.

Asia University Museum of Modern Art

The Asia University Museum of Modern Art stands on the campus of Asia University in Wufeng District. It was the first building in Taiwan designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and his first museum project on a university campus.

The building is organized around equilateral triangles: three triangular forms fit together to create the structure. Exposed concrete and glass curtain walls give it the clean, minimalist appearance associated with Ando’s work. The museum opened on October 24, 2013, with indoor exhibition space and outdoor grounds.

Dadu Ruian Temple

Dadu Ruian Temple is a Mazu temple in Ruijing Village, in Dadu District. The Mazu enshrined there is known affectionately as “Army Mazu,” a title that gives the temple its distinctive local identity.

Ping Shan

Ping Shan is a hill in Taichung City that rises about 347 meters above sea level. The terrain to the east is mountainous, while the western side is flatter, making the hill a clear point of contrast within the city’s wider landscape.

Tanzi Farmers’ Association Barn

The Tanzi Farmers’ Association Barn is a designated historic site in Tanzi District. Its location beside the elevated Taichung railway line makes it especially easy to identify while exploring the area.

Houli Meishan Fuan Temple

The Houli Meishan Fuan Temple is a religious site on Yuntou Road in the Meishan area of Houli District. It offers a quieter stop away from Taichung’s larger urban attractions.

Attabu Fude Temple

Attabu Fude Temple is a small Earth God temple at the entrance to the Wufong District Police Station’s traffic unit in Zhongzheng Village. The temple was established by the prominent Lin family of Wufong and is traditionally connected with the Dai Chaochun incident, an uprising that influenced the history of central Taiwan.
