What to see in Spokane
Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes is a Catholic cathedral and the seat of the Diocese of Spokane. That makes it the central church for Catholics across the region and an important religious landmark in the city.
Fox Theatre
The Fox Theatre is an Art Deco landmark that opened in 1931. Designed by architect Robert C. Reamer, it was originally part of the Fox Film Corporation and showed films for nearly seventy years. After closing in 2000, it became a performing arts venue and the home of the Spokane Symphony.
Bing Crosby Theater
The Bing Crosby Theater began life in 1914 as the 800-seat Clemmer Theater. Its connection with Spokane-born entertainer Bing Crosby dates from 1925, when the young singer regularly performed on its stage between August and October.
The building was refurbished in 1988 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places that December. After restoration, it reopened as the Metropolitan Performing Arts Center, later becoming known locally as The Met before taking its current name.
Westminster United Church of Christ
In the Cliff/Cannon neighborhood, Westminster United Church of Christ stands out for its Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The current building dates from 1890, when it was known as the First Congregational Church. An enlargement in 1927 added larger towers and a Sunday School.
The congregation later merged with Westminster Presbyterian Church. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and remains affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
First Interstate Center for the Arts
The First Interstate Center for the Arts is a major entertainment venue in downtown Spokane. Its theatre seats 2,609 guests, making it one of the city’s principal places for performances and events.
One Spokane Stadium
One Spokane Stadium is a multi-use venue in downtown Spokane’s North Bank district. It opened in September 2023, replacing Joe Albi Stadium, which had served as the city’s football and soccer venue from 1950 through 2021.
The stadium sits beside Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena and The Podium. It hosts Spokane Velocity of USL League One, Spokane Zephyr FC of the USL Super League and USL W League, as well as Spokane Public Schools high school teams.
St. Aloysius Church
St. Aloysius Church is a Catholic parish church on the grounds of Gonzaga University. It serves both as a parish church and as part of campus life, making it a useful stop when exploring Gonzaga and its surroundings.
Campbell House and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture
Campbell House is an elegant historic home in Browne’s Addition. Its early twentieth-century residential architecture offers a view of the lifestyle of one of Spokane’s prominent families, with craftsmanship and detail throughout the mansion.
Nearby, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture provides a broader perspective on the Inland Northwest. Formerly known as the Cheney Cowles Museum, it holds art, historical artefacts and cultural exhibits connected with the region.
Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist
The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane and a prominent landmark in the Rockwood neighborhood on Spokane’s South Hill. Its congregation was formed when All Saints Cathedral, St. Peter’s and St. James merged on October 20, 1929, although construction of the building had begun in 1925.
The cathedral’s sandstone exterior gives it a warm, solid appearance. Inside, a high ceiling decorated with gold and aluminum draws the eye upward.
St. Aidan’s Anglican Church
St. Aidan’s Anglican Church is a historic building in Spokane’s East Central neighborhood. It was built in 1909 as the First German Baptist Church and later changed hands several times. Today, it serves as a parish of the Diocese of Cascadia in the Anglican Church in North America.
Spokane Civic Theatre
Spokane Civic Theatre, known locally as “Civic,” is a non-profit community theatre incorporated in 1947. It is recognised as one of the oldest community theatres in the country and has received numerous awards for excellence in recent seasons.
Grace Baptist Church
In West Central Spokane, the building at 1527 West Mallon Street has served the community for more than a century. It was built in 1911 as North Side Baptist Church in the Late Gothic Revival style.
The building’s historical importance was recognised in 1992, when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places under the name Grace Baptist Church. It is also known as Christ the Redeemer Church.
Chief Spokane Monument
The Chief Spokane Monument honours the Spokane people, whose ancestral homeland is the region. Located in Spokane County, the monument stands about 3 kilometres north of the city of Spokane, making it an accessible stop beyond the city centre.
