Things to Do in Cochabamba: Discover Bolivia's Garden City

Cochabamba offers a warmer, greener alternative to Bolivia’s high-altitude destinations. Set in a fertile valley of the Andes at an altitude of about 2,565 meters, the city is known as La Llajta, the City of Eternal Spring, and the Garden City for its mild climate, abundant vegetation, and relaxed atmosphere. To explore the city at your own pace, Neywo offers a free audio guide for Cochabamba featuring 21 narrated places.

What to See in Cochabamba

Exploring Cochabamba reveals a destination where colonial heritage, lush parks, and architectural landmarks exist side by side.

Plaza 14 de Septiembre and Around

The historic heart of the city centers on Plaza 14 de Septiembre, a classic plaza mayor framed by buildings that represent historic state and religious power. Right on the square stands the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian, also known as Catedral de Cochabamba, the principal church of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Cochabamba. A few steps away, you will find the Jesuit Church, or Parroquia San Ignacio de Loyola, alongside other historic religious landmarks such as the Iglesia de Santo Domingo at the corner of Avenida Ayacucho and Calle Santivañez, built from stone and mud with origins dating back to the seventeenth century. Nearby in Plaza del Granado stands the eighteenth-century Iglesia y Convento de Santa Teresa.

Achá Theatre

Located in the historic center, the Achá Theatre—also known as the Teatro Municipal de Cochabamba—is an important performance space constructed between 1862 and 1864 on the site of the former San Agustín convent. Renamed after former president José María de Achá in 1876, the building features an art nouveau façade designed by architect José de La Zerda and built by Pedro Boneta between 1918 and 1919. It was declared a National Monument in 1967.

Palacio Portales

Designed for Simón Iturri Patiño by architect Eugene Bliault and constructed between 1915 and 1927, Palacio Portales is a grand residence built with European materials like marble and wood. Although the family never inhabited it, the building today houses the Simón I. Patiño Pedagogical and Cultural Center. Its expansive garden features a wide variety of plants alongside statues of Roman emperors, zodiac signs, cherubs, and angels.

Cristo de la Concordia and Natural Landmarks

Rising high above the city on San Pedro Hill, the Cristo de la Concordia is a monumental statue of Jesus standing at a total height of 40.44 meters, built in reinforced concrete by César and Wálter Terrazas Pardo between 1987 and 1994. Visitors can reach the monument by cable car or by climbing the stairs. Across the city, other notable spots include Alalay Lake—a freshwater lake spanning about 2.4 square kilometers with the Circuito Bolivia path for cycling and jogging—as well as Colina de San Sebastian, the Museo de Historia Natural Alcide d’Orbigny, and the Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
