The western edge of the region meets the North Sea, marked by sandy dunes and open beaches, while the eastern shore faces the calmer waters of the Kattegat.
Limfjord and islands
To the northwest the Limfjord cuts into the landscape, and the region also administers the islands of Samsø, Anholt and Fur, each offering distinct coastal scenery.
Landscape contrast
In the west you find coastal dunes and inland heath; moving eastward the terrain rises slightly, giving way to forests, lakes, streams and fertile soils. The eastern part is more hilly and densely settled, creating a striking contrast between open heathland and wooded, agricultural areas.
