Things to do in Attica, Greece

Attica is the region that contains Athens, Greece’s capital and largest city, but it extends far beyond the capital’s streets. The region brings together major cities, historic sites, islands and coastal landscapes, making it worth exploring as more than an urban destination. Neywo has free audio guides for three cities in Attica, with 126 narrated places in total and nine walking tours.

What to see and do in Attica

Explore Athens

Athens is the core of Attica and home to 81 narrated places on Neywo. Its highlights include the Panathenaic Stadium, Άγιος Γεώργιος, Eleusinion and the Athens Polytechnic uprising. The city is the natural starting point for an Attica travel guide, offering the largest concentration of places to discover in the region.

Athens is also connected to the wider region by suburban rail, metro and tram services. From the capital, the rest of Attica opens out towards the coast, its neighbouring cities and the islands served by ferries from Piraeus.

Visit Piraeus

Piraeus is Attica’s major port and a destination in its own right, with 40 narrated places available on Neywo. Among the places covered are the Church of St Paul in Piraeus, the statue of Ανδριάντας Γεώργιου Καραϊσκάκη, the Railway Museum of Athens and Tinan Garden.

The port is also an important link between mainland Attica and the islands. Numerous ferry routes connect Piraeus with destinations including Salamis, Aegina, Hydra and Spetses, making the city a useful point from which to continue exploring the region.

Discover Poros

The island city of Poros has five narrated places on Neywo. Its highlights include the Archaeological Museum of Poros, Poros, the Zoodochos Pigi monastery and the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia.

Poros is one of the islands that form part of Attica, showing how varied the region is beyond the Athens metropolitan area. A visit here adds an island setting and archaeological heritage to the region’s urban and mainland attractions.

Go beyond the capital

Attica’s boundaries include more than Athens, Piraeus and its islands. The region also reaches Elefsina, Megara, Laurium and Marathon, as well as a small part of the Peloponnese peninsula. Its geography combines the Athens Basin, coastal areas, mountains, plains and islands within one administrative region.

More than 95 percent of Attica’s roughly 3.79 million residents live in the Athens metropolitan area, but the region’s identity is not limited to the capital. The islands and other mainland towns create a much broader picture of Attica and offer different settings for travel.

Experience Attica’s contrasting climate

Attica has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate across much of the peninsula, while some areas are hot and semi-arid. These include parts of the Athens Riviera, the Thriasio Plain, Aegina, Hydra and western Attica.

The differences are especially noticeable between northern and southern Attica. Northern areas have wetter, colder winters, and Mount Parnitha has average January highs of around 4 degrees Celsius, with average lows below freezing. Southern mainland areas are milder, while the islands have milder winters still: on Hydra, the average January low is above 10 degrees.

Summer heat is strongest in the interior of the Athens Basin and in western areas. Around Piraeus, land breezes can make summer nights particularly warm. The region therefore brings together mountain cold, urban heat, dry conditions and mild island winters.
