What to See in Poros
Explore Poros and its Saronic Gulf setting
Poros lies close to the Peloponnese, giving it strong connections with the nearby mainland while retaining the character of a small Greek island. The relationship between the island and the opposite coast is an important part of its setting, especially around the historic sites connected with ancient Kalaureia.
As you explore, the island’s past appears under several names and through different layers of history. Poros was known in antiquity as Kalauria, while the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia preserves the memory of one of the ancient island’s most important religious centres.
Visit the Archaeological Museum of Poros
The Archaeological Museum of Poros stands on Korízi Square, just a few steps from the town centre. Established in 1960, it occupies a building constructed in the late 1960s on land donated by the Korízis family.
The museum is arranged over two floors, with one exhibition hall downstairs and another upstairs. Its collections bring together discoveries from Poros and the surrounding area, tracing the story of the region from the Mycenaean period to Roman times.
Among the highlights are finds from Troizina, excavated by the French School at Athens. The collection includes funerary stelae, ancient inscriptions, and Geometric pottery. Together, these objects offer a close look at the communities, customs, and traditions represented in the museum.
See the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi
The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi is set in a lush location on the southern part of Poros, on the slope of a hill at an elevation of 67 metres. It lies about four kilometres east-northeast of the port, providing a destination away from the island’s waterfront.
The present monastery was founded in 1720 by Iakovos the Second, Metropolitan of Athens. It also preserves the memory of an earlier monastery dedicated to the Taxiarchs, which may have dated from the fourteenth century. This connection gives the site a history that reaches beyond the foundation of the current monastery.
Discover the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia
The Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia, also known as the Poseidon Temple, is an archaeological site connected with the ancient island of Kalaureia. The sanctuary was dedicated to Poseidon Kalauros and served as the central sanctuary of the Amphiktyony of Kalaureia.
This association was connected with the ancient city of Kalaureia, the island now known as Poros. The site therefore offers more than the remains of an ancient place of worship: it also reflects the religious and civic relationships that shaped the area in antiquity.
Look across to the Castle of Tselevinia
The Castle of Tselevinia is a ruined coastal castle on the Peloponnese, on a peninsula southeast of Cape Skyli and south of Troezen. Known in Greek as Kastro sta Tselevinia, it is a medieval ruin with a distinctive coastal setting.
Although the castle is not on Poros itself, its position across the surrounding waters makes it a notable historic site in the wider landscape. It is a place to pause and take in the connection between the island and the Peloponnese.
Plan Your Poros Visit Around Its History
Poros is especially rewarding for travellers who enjoy combining a small-island atmosphere with a sense of the past. The Archaeological Museum presents objects from the wider region, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi connects the island with its religious heritage, and the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalaureia reveals the importance of ancient Kalaureia.
Together with the view towards the Castle of Tselevinia on the Peloponnese, these places create a varied route through the history and landscape around Poros. For more ideas elsewhere in the area, explore Piraeus or Athens, and discover more destinations in Greece.
