4 cities in Klaipėda County, Lithuania.

Things to do in Klaipėda County: a coastal guide to western Lithuania

Klaipėda County is Lithuania’s westernmost county and the country’s only county with a coastline. Shaped by the Baltic Sea, the Curonian Lagoon, rivers and the Curonian Spit, it brings together seaside towns, lagoon landscapes and historic urban centres. Neywo offers free audio guides for four cities in Klaipėda County, with 90 narrated places in total across four walking tours.

What to see and do in Klaipėda County

A good way to understand the county is to follow its geography. The land descends from east to west, from the Western Zemaičiai Plateau through the Western Zemaičiai Plain to the Pajurys Lowland and the coast. Water defines the region at every scale: the Baltic lies to the west, the Nemunas forms the southern border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast before flowing into the Curonian Lagoon, and the Šventoji crosses the border with Latvia before returning to the county and reaching the sea.

Klaipėda

The county capital is the main urban centre of this maritime region. Its position beside the opening between the mainland and the Curonian Spit connects the Curonian Lagoon with the Baltic Sea. Klaipėda’s museums offer several ways to explore the city’s history and character, including the Blacksmith Museum, the Clock and Watch Museum and the Lithuanian Sea Museum.

With 45 narrated places, Klaipėda has the largest Neywo audio guide in the county. It is a useful starting point for discovering the region before continuing towards the coast, the lagoon or the Curonian Spit.

The Curonian Spit

The Curonian Spit is one of the county’s most remarkable landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by Lithuania and Russia. On the Lithuanian side, it is separated from the mainland by the narrow opening between Klaipėda and Smiltynė. Through this opening, the Curonian Lagoon flows out into the Baltic Sea.

The spit shows how closely the county’s identity is tied to the coast. The lagoon and open sea are not simply borders on a map: they shape the landscape, settlements and routes through western Lithuania.

Juodkrantė

Juodkrantė lies on the Curonian Spit and is one of the county’s four cities covered by Neywo. Its narrated places include Mizgirių Gintaro Muziejus, the Thomas Mann Memorial Museum, Nida and the Amber Gallery-Museum in Nida.

A guide to Juodkrantė is especially useful for putting the Curonian Spit’s cultural attractions into the context of its lagoon-and-sea setting. The city has 23 narrated places on Neywo.

Nida

Nida is another important destination on the Curonian Spit. Its narrated places include Mizgirių Gintaro Muziejus, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, the Amber Gallery-Museum and Nida Fisherman’s Ethnographic Homestead.

These sites reflect different aspects of the settlement, from religious architecture and amber to local fishing heritage. The Nida audio guide includes nine narrated places.

Palanga

Palanga is one of the county’s coastal cities and another place covered by Neywo. Its narrated sites include the Palanga Amber Museum, Žemaičių Alkas, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Būtingė and the Church of the Assumption.

Together, these places show that the county’s coastal character extends beyond the Curonian Spit. Palanga has 13 narrated places, making it a practical destination for exploring the region’s seaside heritage.

Šventoji and the county’s waterways

The Šventoji is a river with an unusual cross-border route. It begins in Skuodas district, flows north into Latvia’s Courland, returns to Klaipėda County and reaches the Baltic Sea at the coastal settlement also called Šventoji.

Its course is a reminder of the region’s intricate geography, where rivers, lagoons, coastline and national borders intersect. The county’s waterways are part of what makes its landscape different from inland Lithuania.

A coastal climate shaped by the Baltic

Klaipėda County has a maritime climate. Winters are relatively warmer and summers relatively cooler than in the rest of Lithuania, while average daily temperatures vary less. The coast can still be changeable: winter often brings storms and periods of fog across the open sea, lagoon and low coastal land.

Annual rainfall can reach 876 millimetres across the county. These conditions are part of the character of the landscape, particularly where the Baltic coast meets the Curonian Lagoon.
