What to See and Do in Bandipur
Explore Bandipur’s historic center
Bandipur developed into an important trading post between India and Tibet during the 18th century. Newar merchants were drawn to the area partly because its elevation offered protection from malaria, and the settlement grew into a lively commercial center.
The town later declined when a major highway bypassed it. Local efforts helped revive its heritage buildings and traditional streets, preserving Bandipur’s historic character. Today, the old bazaar is a good place to walk at an unhurried pace, with traditional brick buildings, carved wooden windows and flower-filled balconies lining the streets.
The center is largely car-free, which adds to its calm atmosphere. Cafés, tea shops and local eateries bring everyday activity to the historic streets, while traditional snacks and handmade sweets offer a taste of local life.
Take in the hilltop setting
Bandipur’s position in the hills gives it views across layered green landscapes and toward dramatic Himalayan peaks. Viewpoints above the town provide memorable scenery without requiring a lengthy trek, making the surrounding landscape one of the easiest things to enjoy during a visit.
The combination of mountain views, quiet streets and traditional architecture gives Bandipur a distinctive atmosphere within Nepal. It is a peaceful alternative to busier destinations and a rewarding stop for travellers interested in both culture and scenery.
Visit Siddha Cave
Siddha Cave, also known as Siddha Gufa, is an underground attraction in Bimalnagar, in Nepal’s Tanahun District. The cave extends about 437 metres into the rock, with an inner area of around half a kilometre.
Its interior rises to about 50 metres and can accommodate roughly 2,500 people. The scale of the underground space is the main reason to visit: the cave offers a striking change from Bandipur’s open hilltop views and historic streets.
Follow the Chundi River
The Chundi River flows through the western part of Nepal’s Tanahun District. Its quiet course connects the surrounding landscape with the larger River Marshyangdi.
The river has also played a role in local administrative boundaries. Until 2015, it separated Bhanu VDC from Barbhanjhyang VDC. After those areas merged to form Bhanu Municipality, the Chundi continued to serve as a boundary between wards four and five.
Stop at Dharampani
Dharampani is a market center in Bandipur Municipality, in Nepal’s Tanahu District. It is a place where local community life and everyday activity come together.
Dharampani was formerly a Village Development Committee. On May 18, 2014, it became part of a new municipality through an administrative merger. A visit offers a look beyond Bandipur’s heritage center and into the ordinary rhythm of the surrounding area.
Discover the story of Ghansikuwa
Ghansikuwa is known for a pond built by Ghansi, a local grass cutter. His simple act gave the destination its name and its story. The pond is preserved inside a park, where statues of Ghansi and the poet Bhanubhakta can also be seen.
Bhanubhakta was inspired by Ghansi’s work and mentioned him in his writings. Ghansikuwa lies in Tanahu District, in Nepal’s Gandaki Province, and is known as a convenient tourist destination with easy access to the area.
