What to See in Kobarid

Kobarid Museum

The Kobarid Museum, also known as Kobariški muzej, is the essential starting point for understanding the town and the Isonzo Front. Its central subject is the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, remembered as the Miracle at Kobarid. The battle led to an Italian retreat and later became known internationally through Ernest Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms.

The museum opened on October 20, 1990, in the former Mašera country manor. Its collection occupies twelve rooms across two floors, presenting life both on the battlefield and behind the front. Among the most striking displays are a model of the surrounding mountain peaks, showing wartime cableways, paths, mule tracks and the former border between Austria-Hungary and Italy, and a recreated cavern with a soldier writing to his father.

A cannon and shell stand outside the building. Inside, the ground-floor corridor includes monuments to Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers who died on the Isonzo battlefield. A multimedia room completes the visit with a film about the Isonzo Front and a presentation of the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo. The museum received a Council of Europe award in 1993.

Simon Rutar

The museum also introduces Simon Rutar, one of the early Slovenian scholars to receive university training in history. His work helped shape the study of the history and landscape of the Slovenian Littoral and neighbouring regions.

Rutar taught at secondary schools and later worked in museums in Split and Ljubljana. He wrote about history, geography and archaeology, including the substantial History of Tolmin, and is regarded as a pioneer of Slovenian archaeological terminology.

Caporetto War Memorial

Above the town, the pyramid-shaped Kobarid Ossuary is also known as the Italian Charnel House. Completed in 1938 beside the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, it commemorates Italian soldiers who died in the First World War in the battles around Kobarid and the wider areas of Bovec, Tolmin and Rombon.

The memorial contains the remains of 7,014 Italian soldiers, including 2,748 unknown soldiers. Their names, ranks and surnames are recorded in niches arranged in two concentric circles within the octagonal structure. A third circle surrounds the church at the centre, and the word “Presente”, meaning “Present”, appears beside each recorded soldier.

The route from central Kobarid to the top of Gradič follows Stations of the Cross. This adds a devotional element to the memorial visit, while the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua provides a smaller and older point of focus at its heart.

Napoleon Bridge on the Soča

Napoleon Bridge, or Napoleonov most, crosses the Soča near Kobarid, where the river narrows for the last time before reaching the Kobarid Basin. From the stone bridge, the river can be seen flowing through the gorge below.

The name recalls the French forces that crossed here during Napoleon’s conquests. Its setting makes the bridge a natural stop for combining Kobarid’s military history with views of the Soča.

Napoleon Bridge on the Nadiža

Another Napoleon Bridge stands over the Nadiža River near Podbela and Logje. Built as a stepped stone arch over the river’s narrow channels, it is especially distinctive from the gorge below.

The bridge formed part of an old route from Pradol and Robidišče into the Nadiža valley. Local oral tradition attributes its construction to a master mason from Čenebola, in western Slovene Venetian territory. In 1990, Napoleon Bridge was declared a cultural monument of local importance in Slovenia.

Holy Heart of Jesus Church in Drežnica

A little above the village of Drežnica, the Holy Heart of Jesus Church stands on Gorica hill. Its elevated position and impressive size make it a striking landmark above the village.

The church serves as the parish church of Drežnica Parish and is also a pilgrimage church. It was officially proclaimed one in March 1941, giving it a role that extends beyond the local parish.

Churches in Kobarid Municipality

Several smaller churches add quiet historical and architectural stops to an exploration of the municipality. Cerkev Marije snežne, the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, is located in Kobarid Municipality, while St. Andrew’s Church, known locally as Cerkev sv. Andreja, offers another peaceful point of interest in the area.
