What to See in Liège

Liège’s architectural and cultural heritage spans centuries, visible across its historic squares, churches, and former aristocratic residences.

Begin in the heart of the city at Place Saint-Lambert, where you will find the Prince-Bishops’ Palace. Once the residence of the Prince Bishops of Liège, this historic building was reconstructed in the sixteenth century under Cardinal Érard de La Marck after a destructive sack by Charles the Bold. Today, a neo-Gothic wing added in the nineteenth century serves as the Provincial Palace, while the historic section houses the Palace of Justice.

Nearby stands Liège Cathedral, also known as St. Paul’s Cathedral. Founded in the tenth century as a collegiate church, much of the structure took shape between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries in rich Meuse Gothic architecture, later becoming the seat of the diocese after Saint Lambert’s Cathedral was destroyed in 1795.

In the Féronstrée and Hors-Château district, the Curtius Palace (or Palais Curtius) stands as one of the finest examples of the Meuse style. Built between 1600 and 1610 for the industrialist and merchant Jean De Corte, its imposing scale and red-brick façade reflect the industrial growth of seventeenth-century Liège. Nearby along rue Hors-Château, you can also see the Hôtel Sklins, an eighteenth-century private mansion.

Religious heritage runs deep through the city’s former collegiate and monastic foundations. The Church of St. Denis was founded in 987 by Notker of Liège and combines Meuse Romanesque and Gothic styles within a structure originally designed to form part of the city’s defenses. In the Avroy district, the Abbaye de la Paix Notre-Dame features an abbey church renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved Baroque interior crafted in the Liège and Aachen style. Across the river in the Outremeuse district, the église Saint-Nicolas serves as a local parish church on Rue Fosse aux Raines, carrying on the site’s earlier monastic traditions.

The city’s cultural life is anchored by major institutions such as the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, which has occupied the Théâtre royal on Place de l’Opéra since its inauguration in 1820, providing over two centuries of operatic history. Along Boulevard Piercot, you will also find the Salle philharmonique de Liège, a notable performance hall.

Liège’s defensive and aristocratic past extends into its surrounding districts. In the Angleur district, Château de Péralta (or Château de Kinkempois) traces its history back to the fourteenth century as a defensive fortress of the prince-bishops before passing to Saint Lawrence Abbey. Further afield, you can discover historic residences and defensive structures such as the neoclassical Château de Beaumont in Sclessin, the fortified Château des Quatre Tourettes in Saint-Léonard, Château de Fayenbois in Jupille-sur-Meuse, and Château de Sclessin.
