Château de Rochefort

Rising from a rocky height south of the town within a bend of the Lomme, the Château Comtal de Rochefort is today a ruin, but its surviving walls trace the history of a former stronghold. The settlement below takes its name from this early fortress, originating from Rocha Fortis, meaning fortified rock. The oldest remains and the donjon date from the twelfth century, built by the first lords of Rochefort, the Montaignus. Over subsequent centuries, the strategic hilltop position changed hands through several dynasties, including the Duras, Walcourt, De La Marck, Stolberg, and Löwenstein families, and was besieged repeatedly. From this height, visitors enjoy wide panoramas over Rochefort and the Famenne.

Notre-Dame de la Visitation

This monumental church in Rochefort serves as a Catholic place of worship and the seat of a deanery. Designed by Brussels architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar, the building was put into use on May 24, 1874, and consecrated on November 11 of that same year by Monsignor Gravez, Bishop of Namur. Constructed using regional limestone, the Romanesque Revival church features a central façade framed by two towers, a rose window, and eight statues adorning the center.

Château de Lavaux-Sainte-Anne

Located near Rochefort, this distinctive Belgian castle is surrounded by a moat and combines sturdy round fifteenth-century corner towers—topped with memorable onion-shaped domes—with a softer Renaissance courtyard framed by softly colored brick façades and arcades. Although it did not hold a strategic position for very long, its fortifications and architecture remain a defining local landmark.

Arc Majeur

Traveling near Lavaux-Sainte-Anne brings visitors to the Arc Majeur, a monumental corten steel sculpture created by French sculptor Bernar Venet and installed in 2019 across both sides of the E411 motorway. The two sections reach heights of 60 metres and 20 metres, and together weigh 250 tonnes. Commissioned originally in the 1980s under French President François Mitterrand for a site near Auxerre, the project was ultimately realized in Belgium with funding largely provided by the John Cockerill Foundation.
