Tungurahua volcano

Tungurahua is one of Ecuador’s most striking natural landmarks. The active stratovolcano rises to 5,023 metres above sea level in the Cordillera Oriental, the eastern range of the Andes. Baños lies about eight kilometres north of the volcano, making it the closest settlement to this imposing mountain.

Its name comes from the Quichua words tunguri, meaning “throat”, and rahua, meaning “fire”. The name reflects the volcano’s character: Tungurahua has experienced frequent eruptions since activity resumed on 19 August 1999. Major eruptive episodes followed in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

The volcano rises from a base roughly nine kilometres wide, with forest covering its lower slopes. Its presence shapes the landscape around Baños and gives the town a dramatic Andean backdrop. The mountain has also challenged climbers for centuries: Alexander von Humboldt attempted to reach the summit in 1802 but had to turn back.

The Pastaza River

The Pastaza River begins in the Andes before continuing towards the Amazon. Its source lies just north of Tungurahua, where the Patate River—descending from the slopes of Cotopaxi—and the Chambo River, arriving from the south, meet.

About seven kilometres east of Baños, the river is held back by the Agoyán hydroelectric project. The dam was positioned to preserve the Falls of Agoyán, located five kilometres farther downstream. After dropping over the falls, the Pastaza enters a narrow gorge where the current forms powerful class-four rapids, making the river a popular setting for whitewater rafting.

The route from Baños towards Puyo follows the Troncal Amazonas highway alongside the river. It passes through seven tunnels and beside four major waterfalls. Agoyán and Pailón del Diablo are the best-known of them and provide two particularly memorable stops in the river valley.

The Pastaza also explains much of Baños’s adventurous character. Its deep gorge, waterfalls and fast-moving water create a landscape that is as suited to sightseeing as it is to outdoor activities.

A town between the Andes and the Amazon

Baños de Agua Santa occupies a distinctive position between the Andes and the upper Amazon basin. Tungurahua rises to the west and north, while the Pastaza valley opens eastwards towards the rainforest. This geography brings together steep mountain slopes, dense vegetation, waterfalls and river scenery within a compact destination.

The town’s thermal waters add another dimension to the experience. After exploring the surrounding volcanic and river landscapes, visitors can turn to the mineral-rich hot springs that have long been central to Baños. The combination of warm pools, dramatic hills and waterways gives the destination its characteristic balance of activity and relaxation.
