Puerto Ayora is often described as the heart of the Galápagos because of its central location and economic importance. It is home to the Charles Darwin Foundation, the Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Station, institutions that play an important role in the town’s character.

A central route through Puerto Ayora follows Avenida Charles Darwin, running from the city’s largest harbor dock towards the Charles Darwin Research Station of the Charles Darwin Foundation. Walking this route offers an introduction to the town’s connection with the sea, scientific research and conservation.

The name Puerto Ayora honors Isidro Ayora, who was president of Ecuador from 1926 to 1931. The city’s origins date to the beginning of the twentieth century, and its growth accelerated after it became the seat of the canton.

Santiago Island

Santiago Island, also known as San Salvador or James Island, reveals the volcanic character of the Galápagos through its lava formations and sparse vegetation. It covers 585 square kilometres and reaches 907 metres at Cerro Cowan, a volcanic dome. The island consists of two overlapping volcanoes, with its oldest lava flows dating back 750,000 years.

Several notable sites lie around Santiago’s coast. Espumilla Beach is on the north, while James Bay lies to the west and Sullivan Bay to the east, facing Bartolomé Island. Both bays contain broad flows of pahoehoe and aa lava from an eruption in 1889.

The lava landscape also preserves impressions left by Maytenus octogona, small trees with leathery leaves. Other vegetation includes Mollugo crockeri shrubs, salt plants and some Brachycereus nesioticus cactus. Together, these details make Santiago a vivid place to observe how volcanic terrain and plant life meet.

Bartolomé Island and Pinnacle Rock

Bartolomé Island is a small, uninhabited volcanic island near Sullivan Bay, just east of Santiago Island. It covers about 1.2 square kilometres and reaches a highest point of 114 metres. Its best-known landmark is Pinnacle Rock, which rises dramatically from Sullivan Bay.

A path of wooden steps leads towards the summit. From the highest point, there are broad views of Bartolomé and the surrounding islands. The climb also passes through unusual volcanic terrain, where red, orange, green and black soils contrast with more recent lava formations.

Bartolomé is an extinct volcano with a relatively easy-to-climb volcanic cone. Its distinctive scenery and Pinnacle Rock have made it one of the most visited and photographed islands in the Galápagos. The landscape also appeared in the 2003 adventure film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
