Haapsalu Castle
The castle complex dates back to the 13th century and was founded as the seat of the Bishopric of Ösel‑Wiek. Its stone cathedral, the oldest part of the site, was built in the mid‑1200s and first appears in town records in 1278. Over the centuries the fortress served as a bishop’s residence, a fortification and, after a fire in 1688, only the cathedral was rebuilt and continued as a Lutheran church.
Iloni Imedemaa
Just a short walk from the castle, Iloni Imedemaa is a museum dedicated to the illustrator Ilon Wikland. Housed in a three‑storey building at Kooli tänav 5, it combines a gallery, cinema, exhibition hall, playroom and kitchen. In summer the garden opens as a themed park with craft workshops, and the centre is now managed by the Haapsalu and Läänemaa Museums foundation established in 2013.
Haapsalu Advent Church
This church was created by converting an old boiler house according to a design by architect Reet Aedviir. Reconstruction began in 1996 and the first service was held on September 1, 2001, giving the building its current role as the place of worship for Haapsalu’s Adventist congregation.
Haapsalu Alexander Nevsky Church
Located in the old cemetery, this small Orthodox church was built in 1896‑1897 from a standard design, with its bell tower added in 1899. Its Russian Revival style is attributed to architect Alexander Krasovsky and the building is protected as an architectural monument. The church served the local congregation for services in the colder months and for funerals until it was closed by authorities in 1962.
Haapsalu Cathedral (Toomkirik)
Inside the castle grounds, the cathedral is a medieval stone church erected in the 1250s or 1260s. It became the cathedral of the Saare‑Lääne Bishopric, the seat of its bishop and the home of the bishop’s clerical college, known as the Saare‑Lääne Cathedral Chapter.
Haapsalu Church of the Congregation of Maria Magdalena
This Orthodox church at Rüütli Street 2 is used by the Haapsalu Maria‑Magdalena Orthodox Congregation. Belonging to the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church, its building is registered as an architectural monument, marking it as a recognised part of the nation’s heritage.
Haapsalu St. John’s Church
Situated at 4 Kooli Street, this church belongs to the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church and forms part of the town’s traditional Lutheran landscape.
Haapsalu Methodist Church
Found at Endla 6, the Methodist church was completed in 1922 based on plans by architects Eugen Habermann and Herbert Johanson. During World War II it housed the evacuated Tartu Eye Clinic, and an organ was added by 1961, enriching its use as a place of worship.
Railway and Communications Museum
Occupying Haapsalu’s former railway station (built 1904‑1905), the museum displays the longest covered platform in Europe at the time—213.6 metres. Exhibits cover Estonian railway history, outdoor locomotives and a communications collection that includes telephones, telegraph equipment, television, radio and postal items. Visitors can see a working telephone switchboard and examples of punched‑tape data exchange.
Bernhard Laipman Monument
Erected in 1933 by sculptor Roman Haavamägi, this memorial stands at Vaikne kallas 12 and is registered as a historical monument, honouring the local figure Bernhard Laipman.
Ernst Enno Monument
Located in Ernst Enno Park at Õhtu kallas 31, the monument was designed by Roman Haavamägi and unveiled on July 30, 1939. It commemorates the poet Ernst Enno and is a modest but meaningful landmark in the town.
Rudolf Tobias Monument
Set in Jaan Poska Park on Promenaadi Street 3, this monument was created by Roman Haavamägi and unveiled in 1929. It honours the composer Rudolf Tobias and is protected as a state‑protected cultural monument.
Tchaikovsky Bench (Tchaikovsky Monument)
On Tchaikovsky Boulevard overlooking Tagalaht Bay, the bench was made in 1940 by Roman Haavamägi. It marks the spot where the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky often sat to watch the sunset and incorporates a fragment of the Estonian folk song “Kallis Mari,” a melody that later appeared in his Sixth Symphony.
