Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó

Known in English as Mission Loreto, Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó was the first successful mission and Spanish town in Baja California. The Jesuit missionary Juan María de Salvatierra founded it on October 25, 1697, at the Monqui settlement of Conchó, in what is now the city of Loreto.

For more than a century, the mission served as an important religious center. It closed in 1829 except for its essential Catholic church functions, which continued afterward. The mission is central to Loreto’s identity and to the history of the California missions.

Misión San Bruno

Misión San Bruno was the first Spanish mission established on the Baja California Peninsula. The Jesuit order founded it on October 7, 1684, in what is now the municipality of Loreto.

Although its history was short-lived, the mission represents an early moment in the Spanish presence on the peninsula. Its place in the region’s history makes it one of the important sites to include when exploring Loreto and its surroundings.

Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó

In San Javier, within present-day Loreto Municipality, Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó is a surviving Spanish mission. Jesuits founded it in 1699 during the colonial era of the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

The mission closed in 1817, but its church has survived and remains in use. That continuing connection between the building and religious life gives the site a strong link with Loreto’s colonial past.

Misión San Juan Bautista Malibat

Misión San Juan Bautista Malibat, also known as Misión San Juan Bautista de Ligüí, is a historic religious site near the Gulf of California, about 30 kilometres south of Loreto.

The Jesuit missionary Pedro de Ugarte founded the mission in November 1705. Its location makes it part of the wider group of historic mission sites associated with Loreto and the early Spanish presence in Baja California Sur.

Visita de San Juan Bautista Londó

The Visita de San Juan Bautista Londó was a former Catholic mission station connected with Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó. It was founded in 1699 by the Jesuit missionaries Juan María de Salvatierra and Francisco María Piccolo at the Cochimí settlement of Londó.

The visita served as an extension of the mission at Loreto Conchó, forming part of the Spanish missionary presence in what is now the Municipality of Loreto.

Loreto stands beside the Gulf of California and serves as the municipal seat of Loreto Municipality. Today, it is both a regional economic and cultural center and a major tourist destination on the Baja California Peninsula.

Loreto later became the capital of the Province of the Californias, a role it held until 1777, when the capital moved to Monterey, California.
