What to see in Tetovo

Tetovo’s most important sights range from a richly decorated mosque and a former Bektashi lodge to churches, museums and historic buildings. These are the places that reveal the city’s layered history.

Šarena Mosque

The Šarena Mosque, also known as the Painted Mosque, stands near the Pena River and is one of North Macedonia’s most distinctive mosques. Its name refers to the colourful decoration that covers the building, setting it apart from the more restrained appearance of many Ottoman-era mosques.

The mosque was originally built in the fifteenth century and rebuilt in 1833 by Abdurrahman Pasha, the son of Rexhep Pasha. An inscription above the entrance records this history. Its design is also unusual: because the original building predates the conquest of Constantinople, it follows the traditional Anatolian style rather than the later Byzantine-influenced domed style.

In the courtyard, the octagonal türbe contains the tombs of two women, Hurshide and Mensure.

Arabati Baba Tekḱe

At the edge of Tetovo, beneath the Šar Mountain, Arabati Baba Tekḱe is an Ottoman-era Bektashi dervish lodge and one of the city’s defining landmarks. The complex is associated with Sersem Ali Baba, a dervish of the Bektashi order. Its original shrine dates from 1538, while the wider grounds were established in 1799 through a charitable endowment from Recep Paşa.

The site is arranged around the türbe of Sersem Ali Baba and includes a fountain, prayer hall, tower, kitchen and dining hall, guest konak, dervish lodge and haremlik quarters. Around fifteen dervishes once lived here under the leadership of an elder known as a baba. The tekke is so closely associated with Tetovo that it appears on the city’s coat of arms.

Tetovo Gallery of Fine Arts

The Tetovo Gallery of Fine Arts occupies the historic Čifte Hammam on the left bank of the Pena River. The building has been renovated several times while retaining its original appearance; its most recent restoration took place between 2005 and 2007.

Today, the gallery is divided into art, administration and education sections. It is funded by the Ministry of Culture and donations, combining the character of a historic hammam with the role of a national art gallery.

Alim Beg’s House

Alim Beg’s House is a rare example of residential architecture protected as part of North Macedonia’s cultural heritage. Built by Alim Beg in a modern neo-Baroque style, it preserves the traditional Ottoman division between public and private areas.

The asymmetrical house has a ground floor and two upper floors. Its façade includes a curved Baroque staircase, while the interior contains a reception salon, an open veranda and a distinctive six-sided tower-like room. The rooms vary in shape, including polygonal, semicircular, hexagonal and rectangular spaces.

Tetovo Region Museum

The Tetovo Region Museum is the national museum dedicated to the history and culture of the area. Founded in 1950, it was first housed at Arabati Baba Tekke before moving to other locations. Since 1990, it has been located in the Memorial House of Goce Stojčevski.

Its departments cover history, archaeology, ethnology and art history. The collections range from ancient artefacts to traditional costumes and works of art, giving visitors a broader view of the region’s past and cultural traditions.

Memorial Museum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Macedonia

This museum occupies Jovanova House, the place where the Communist Party of Macedonia was founded on March 19, 1943. The museum opened to the public in 1968 and the building is recognised as part of North Macedonia’s cultural heritage.

The most significant part of the visit is the room where the founding meeting took place. The site forms part of the Museum of the Tetovo Region and offers a direct connection with the political history of the country.

Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral

In Tetovo’s old part, the Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius serves as the seat of the Tetovo Archbishopric. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in the Polog region.

Construction began in 1903 and the cathedral was completed in 1918. The project faced unstable, damp ground, and stone for the building was brought from Tetovo’s fortress by the local population. The church was funded through voluntary donations from local Christians and consecrated on July 12, 1925.

Church of the Theotokos Life Giving Spring

The Church of the Theotokos Life Giving Spring is a Macedonian Orthodox church in the Gorno Maalo neighbourhood in the upper part of Tetovo. It serves as the main parish church of the Third Tetovo Parish and remains an important spiritual centre for its local community.

St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Church is a Macedonian Orthodox church in the Koltuk neighbourhood, in upper Tetovo. It is the main parish church for the Tetovo quarter parish and is built in the revival style associated with the Bulgarian National Revival period.

St. Petka Church

The Church of St. Petka and St. Nedela is a small Orthodox church in the old part of Tetovo, in the Koltuk neighbourhood. It stands in the courtyard of St. Nicholas Church, next to the monument to Tetovo’s citizens executed in 1944.

The church honours both saints because the older temple on the site was dedicated to St. Petka, while Tetovo had no church dedicated to St. Nedela. During construction, workers discovered the remains of a much older church measuring 3 by 2 metres and dating from the fourteenth century. The present church was completed and consecrated in 2007.

St. Demetrius Church

St. Demetrius Church stands in the city cemetery in northwestern Tetovo, on the site of a former small chapel. Built of stone and solid brick, it was consecrated three years after construction ended, in 1915, and reconsecrated in 1958.

The church underwent a complete reconstruction in 1990, including work on its roof, doors, windows, electrical system, floor and interior painting.
